Is a 4WD necessary to explore area between Cairns and Cape Tribulation? We are going in October 2014

No. Lots to see on or close to the paved roads. The main road is of good quality and fully paved.

It's really only beyond Cape Trib that a 4wd would be required.

the road [as stated by inas66] is sealed all the way to cape tribulation it is only beyond cape tribulation that the road becomes 4wd .the trip from cairns follows the coast around to about the port doulas [ a must visit] then through cane fields to Mossman [another must visit is Mossman gorge] after passing through Mossman you cross the daintree river by ferry [more of a punt than a ferry][takes about 5 minutes] then around the rainforest and coast again to cape tribulation and the daintree region ,enjoy your trip north queensland is a beautiful part of the world

That is perfect - thanks grumpyoldman! That is more or less the trip I had hoped to do. Looking forward to it immensely.

HI

No you won't need a FWD as the roads are good

Don't go pass Cap Trib if you do plan on that then you will need a FWD

There are lots to see and do on the way up so give yourself plenty of time

That's exactly the trip I finished a couple days ago, except I was based in Port Douglas. The roads all the way up to Cape Tribulation are good quality and if you enjoy driving then I'd recommend perhaps hiring a better car than just the basic Corolla or Hyundai. It's a beautiful drive with beautiful photo opportunities.

As other's mentioned you don't need a 4WD only for the Bloomfield Track which starts after CT & goes to Cooktown.
