Cairns? Palm Cove? Port Douglas? Someplace else?

My husband and I are headed to the GBR in early June and are trying to decide where we should stay. We are flying into Cairns but are open to some place else to stay. We prefer someplace a little quieter and it seems Cairns has grown up since I was there 20 years ago. Thoughts?

I've been to Port Douglas 5 times and, obviously, really like it there. The beach is great; there's a good variety of shopping and restaurants; the town is small enough to easily get to many places on foot.

I love Mission Beach. It is very much a small town on the edge of the forest and adjacent to Dunk Island. Lovely feel about the place, quiet, laid back and very pretty, with enough choices in accommodation, shopping, tours and restaurants to keep us happy.

It really depends on what you want to do while you are here? Can you give us an indication of what you would like to do?

We are really looking to relax, a little shopping, snorkeling, tennis if we can find it, walking on the beach.

+1 for Port Douglas. One of my favourite stretches of beach in Australia. It's only an hour north of Cairns so you can do a day trip if you really want to. Plus from Port Douglas you have better access to the Daintree National Park, and Mossman Gorge is a short walk away. You can do trips out to the GBR from Port Douglas and Cairns but from memory the choice is better in Cairns.

Cairns itself has no beaches - there is a man made lagoon for swimming.

Another vote for PD it offers - " relax, a little shopping, snorkeling, tennis if we can find it, walking on the beach."

Keep the votes coming for PD, especially with an abundant

variety of restaurants and food styles available here.

Shopping in Cairns is great, but to relax,

the outer reef tour was our favourite for snorkelling, less crowded than the inner reef or Green Island and cheaper from Port Douglas.

A walk along 4 mile beach at Port Douglas is one of the most popular.

Palm Cove, majority of accommodation is across the road from the beach with beautiful views, beautiful quaint little village, love it...
