stinger season

I just read a post that mentioned Stinger season. We will be traveling to Cairns mid-October. Is it not safe to go snorkeling?

It depends on sea temperature and wind direction - as we approach summer we get more warm northerly winds which warm up the water and bring in the stingers. But don't worry - even if there are stingers aound your tour operator will provide you with stinger suits.
