Single Girl seeking Cairns hotel advice

I will be travelling solo to Cairns in late October (22/10 to 31/10) and after a 4 day liveaboard GBR dive trip I have 5 days to soak up some sun and see the sights. I need advice on what hotel would cater for me; professional, friendly 32 year old who is not keen on a backpacker hostel and not keen on a honeymoon resort. Any price range suits. Thanks heaps!

The best Hotels in Cairns are the Cairns International, the Casino property or the Shangrila. These are 5 star. The Oasis is a 4 star but very nice. All are centrally located. Outrigger is also good.

Good luck

Have a look at the website for Lilybank (www.lilybank.com.au, I think); the owners there, Pat and Mike Woolford, are so eager for their guests to have a good time that they really go out of their way to make things run smoothly. I have even known Pat to "size up" a potential client's needs and then recommend a different establishment as being more appropriate! Pat, in fact, spends a lot of her time contributing to the travel forum at Fodor's, and while she has a lot of great advice to give inquirers, she deliberately refrains from even mentioning that her own B&B is the best place to stay in Cairns. However, the people who stay there are far less reticent, and she gets uniformly rave reviews. I have never stayed there -- never been to Cairns, actually -- but I know that if I were going up that way, Lilybank would be my only choice; I appreciate the ethics of people like Pat ands Mike Woolford and would be glad to give them my business (or, as you see, to give them this free plug!)

While in Cairns and not staying in private homes, I find myself staying at Pacific International Hotel, or down the road Tradewinds or Holiday Inn - good old Western Chains but you will find a comfort here and no surprises. They are all in a great location within walking distance of all sidewalk bistros, shops, casino, waterfront park and boardwalk if you want to take a morning run. I fell totally safe and comfortable in these properties and are all tried and true. I think they will average around $140-150 USD so not over the top. If you wish some fluf and budget is not a problem, Hilton, Shangri-la or Sofitel Reef are also great choices. All of these will allow you to walk anywhere you wish to go.

Thanks so much for all your recommendations. I have looked into them all and will select one soon. Regardless of my selection, I will be surrounded by couples. Does a single, adventure traveller style exist in Cairns? Hmmm i wonder.. Thanks!

Absolutely! Cairns is the land of the singles! Really! You will find singles everywhere - for some good social interaction go to Gilligan's pool bar, or one of the backpacker places like Calypso around happy hour and you will sit at communal tables, have a drink and meet people instantly.

I am a 35 year old who will be travelling solo 10/11 - 10/12. I was debating whether to do Cairns. Will be in the same situation as yourself re accomodation - if poss let me know how you got on! How did you book your dive trip - was it recommended. Have nevr dived or snorkelled -but its on the def want to do when I am there list!

On a more gen point... I am in Oz for 4 weeks..Arriving Sydney, there for a week...not sure of in between section but to include Carins and have to end up in Perth, poss fly down and do Ocean Road...spend last week in Perth area and fly out from there! Not sure how long you in / have been in Oz angiepangie but any hints and tips (or anyone else) I am keen to do trips but want to avoid gangs 19- 22 year old backpackers if poss. Dont' mean to be offensive as nothing against em - just feel been there done that..would rather mix with older single travellers / couples even!

Any advice/Info/thoughts welcomed!

For the dive portion, take a look at this web site

totally informational and will at least give you an idea of what dive options you have. Angiepangie is obviously a certified diver doing 4 night liveboard trip, but as a non diver you may wish to look at Pro Dive's 2 night/3day trip - they take snorkelers as well, and during Nov the water will be nice and warm / they will also offer intro diving if you wish to give it a try. Then when you come back to Cairns after the trip, if you really like it why dont you sign up for one of their learn to dive courses. www.ozdive.com and click liveaboards.

Have a great trip!

Hi,

I am a 36 year old single female and will be in Cairns soon (flying straight from the States) for 4 nights. Wanted to be abound other travelers, and enjoy the backpacker atmosphere, but generally now stick to single rooms since I am older. This time I booked at the Club Crocodile Hides Hotel for $75 AUD (rack rate was $145); it's listed in Fodor's and Rough Guides and includes breakfast and a light dinner. It's smack downtown and it seemed like some of the less rowdy hostels were a tad father out (though hard to tell). Cheers.
