Stay in Cairns or on the beaches as it is central to everything. You should visit Great Barrier Reef - try Reef Magic - huge pontoon and fish and coral is great, or Ocean Spirit.

There is always ballooning, rafting, skyrail and kuranda scenic train, there is great places to self drive and your accommodation place (if it has the proper managers) will go through an area map with you and show you good places to drive to.

If you are going to spend three days in Cairns at the conference then get out of town and - a. head up to one of the northern beaches for a few days or Port Douglas, it's just over an hours drive. From PD you can visit mossman gorge, Daintree village or a day trip to Cape Tribulation. If you just want to laze around the beach is great and the eating options excellent and a number of the reef boats leave from here. Closer to Cairns, Palm Cove is half an hour and has a great beach, a trip to Kuranda, green island or Hartley Creek croc farm is nearby.

b. if you prefer the mountains then it's just over an hour to Crater Lakes, Yungaburra and the waterfall circuit. This area has great places to stay and eat, it is very relaxing and tranquil with lots of rainforest.

If you post indicating what your preference and style of accommodation is then you will get plenty of suggestions posted back for places to stay.

Many thanks for the advice - had a great time in Port Douglas and found this more to my taste than Cairns. Greatly enjoyed the trip to Australia.

Will stay longer next time.

Thanks
