Should we stay in Brisbane for a couple of days???

My husband are travelling to Australia from the UK in November and will be flying to Brisbane from the 7 - 13 November and then onto Airlie Beach. We are not sure whether we should spend a few nights in Brisbane or pick up the hire car from the airport and travel straight to the Gold Coast and then onto the Sunshine Coast?

Also if anyone could recommend accommodation in Brisbane etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is a tough question.

It depends I guess on what you are planning to do on the Gold Coast. If you like morning beach walks than stay on the Coast, not Brisbane. If you are planning to visit the theme parks on the Gold Coast 2 of the 3 major ones (Dreamworld and MovieWorld) are probably just as easily accessible from Brisbane as from a lot of the G Coast ,as they are located on the Bris - GC motorway north of the coast. Also for a hinterland drive behind the G Coast a quick drive down from Brisbane wouldnt be much of a problem. Also think how you might like to spend your evenings. The Gold Coast parties, but Brisbane offeres ample restraunt, bar and other activities.

I'd certainly head to the Sunshine Coast for a couple of nights....and try and be there on either Wednesday or Saturday for the Eumundi Markets.

Check www.wotif.com.au for hotels in all areas. Its a standby booking service ( up to 4 weeks in advance). It 'll give you an idea of price and locations.

Good locations in Brisbane include most of the CBD - check if parking is included in the cost though, the Spring Hills area which is within walking distance od the CBD and Roma Street parklands.,

On the Coast it really depnds how you want to spend the nights....partying means you stay in the heart of Surfers, but for quieter nights I could suggest Royal Pacific Resort (7km nth of Surfers) or Chancellor Hope Island even further north. But a short drive to Sanctuary Cove.

If you give some idea of what type of accommodation (pricewise and accomm style), and nightlife acttivities appeal , or nominate a few off the wotif website I'd pass further opinions.

Thanks for your quick response.

We are looking for a hotel in a good location, nice bars and restaurants but not clubs and definately nice beaches and plenty of sightseeing.

We have been told that Maloolaba is worth a visit and Noosa Heads so we are wanting accommodation around those areas.

We definately want to do at least one of the theme parks and the zoo. Could we visit these places if staying in Maloolaba - is it a long drive?

the gold coast and sunshine coasts are each about 1 hr from brisbane.... but in opposite directions. if you stay at mooloolaba (north) then australia zoo is about 20mins drive back towards brisbane, and the theme parks are about 1 1/2 hrs back through brisbane and out the otherside towards the gold coast (south).

the sunshine coast is better if you are interested in cafe culture and quiet family friendly beaches. the gold coast is much more touristy.... it has a huge nightlife, lots of adventure activities like jet boating and bungy jumping, and lots of tourist shops.

the two coasts have completely different vibes.

Brisbane is a nice city and may be good for a rest after your long flight. Brisbane is a river city and as such does not have beaches ( except for free man made beach and lagoon at South Bank).

If you are looking for beaches, head to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast, good accom in both areas with a diverse amount of activites available if you wish.

I am staying in Brisbane for 3 days and using it as a base to visit australia zoo and surfers paradise. I have been told that the Holiday Inn is reasonable and a good central location.

We are working on the theory that on the 3rd day we will hire a car and make our way up coast stopping at Noosa/Fraser Island and then getting a ferry to Hamilton Island via Harvey Bay I think.
