Travel Agent for Complex USA trip

Hi,

I usually plan my own trips, but I think its time to get an expert.

I am looking to travel with my family to USA over Christmas.

My plans will involved cars/hotels/attractions/skiing/flights/trains.

To make all this a smooth as possible I think a specialised travel agent on USA travel would be the best idea.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Hans

do u really need an 'expert'?

esp if u r used to planning your own trips.

nothing there u couldn't do yourself altho I am not aware of the complications surrounding the skiing side of things.

Yep we always plan our own trips . Going to the US and Europe for 2 months this year and will include walking, hotels, car hire, flights (10) , trains, sightseeing tours etc. No need for a travel agent.

Not sure which bits you are struggling with hans.

Hi hansvanderdrift.

<<My plans will involved cars/hotels/attractions/skiing/flights/trains.>> you should know this is normal for organising an OS trip. My daughter has just organised her and her partners trip OS for this year. Take out skiing in your statement and add cruise requirements and documents, private and organised tours and thats what she's organised by herself, and has never done this before. As an avid traveller I'm pretty proud her, not that I was looking over her shoulder every step of the way, I didn't have to intervene, when she wanted help I said go to TA and the service providers directly, she did, and she said she recieved fantastic help.

Seriously, you'll get more satisfaction out of planning it yourself, and you'll know exactly what, when and where you'll be heading.

Agreed, no agent needed.

Safe travels - Robert

I agree with all the above.

If you think about it, from your plans listed, if you remove the attractions and skiing, you've done it all before.

The two components you may need help on, is just the same as all the other planning you've done - research and once you have some rough ideas on where you'd like to go skiing and attractions to see, just ask in the destination forums here on TA, and let the local experts give you the best advice.

The likelihood is that with locals advice, you're going to have a better holiday than any package the agent can put together.

You can do it. I just put together a 2 week trip to your country where I am going to visit 3 different locations. I love to research and just reading trip advisor has made a big difference. I also bought a couple of travel guides.

Being a skier, I would suggest anything in Idaho, Colorado, Utah, or Montana. Sun Valley is my favorite!

If you are used to planning your own trips, planning a trip in the U.S., even a lengthy one with all the aspects you mention, will be a piece of cake. Everything you need is online and we locals are happy to help out! No one travel agent is going to know as much as all the folks here on Trip Advisor.

BTW, we had a nice chat with someone from your neck of the woods today. (We were helping him find a certain museum in Washington, D.C.) He said he used to live on the Gold Coast, but was now living not far from Coolangatta in Murwillumbah. I've actually been to Coolangatta, but I did have to look up Murwillumbah on the map!

I agree with the others that this is easy to do on your own. However it takes time. I would doubt you would find a travel agent experienced in all these things.

Start with the flights and trains. Check into the ski areas and when they are best and work from there. Things are still slow economically and you should have no problem finding places to stay.

Go on the US forums and see what local people say. You will need to get a good idea of what is possible in the time you have.

When you say smooth as; are you meaning to take the stress out of your holiday planning this time? In that instance; any savvy Travel Agent will help you in that :)

Since you already have an idea of what you want to do, you may just need to arrange a time frame and budget, how long shall you need care hire, and dates to arrive at a particular place etc…

Meanwhile if you find e.g. a cheaper airfare on the Internet you can always ask the Agent to match or better that price. When it comes to Hotels there is a limit on what they can offer as they are bound to offer customers reputable accommodation etc. from their listings.

For me, I acquired their help (a novice back then) when it came to booking Airfares and our particular Tour as I required confirmation. The remaining plans – Insurance, Train, Attractions and Accommodation was by far cheaper doing it myself and more practically located than what they offered me. Whilst Agents are helpful, only you know what you want to see, do and when!?

Cheers Angie

Please be aware that trains in the US are few and far between. It is nothing like Europe or Aussie Land in that regard. The US Amtrak system does not own any lines so they rent them from the other companies. This means their trains have to pull over and stop whenever the freight cars need the rail. Trips can take forever. Stick with a car for your travels.
