Family holiday in Queensland

First trip to OZ.

We want to spend two weeks in Queensland - we are flying into Brisbane. surfers is not for us - want to take kids snorkelling away from high rise developments. Kids are 10 @ 12. Limited budget so can't really fly up to North Qu. What is sunshine coast like? Or is it feasible to drive up to Great Keppel? Want a low key quiet place that has good snorkelling.....medium range accommodation.

If you are looking for good snorkelling, you really need to get closer to the Barrier Reef. I am assuming the snorkelling you wish to do invloves reef. Yes Keppel can be good snorkelling if you are not fazed by the sea snakes.

Closest area to Brisbane is Lady Elliot Island and Heron Island, both islands are coral cays and the snorkelling / diving is fantastic.

For snorkelling then as said heron or lady elliott islands are the southernmost part of the barrier reef.Lady elliott is the closest to brisbane and a little cheaper than heron. It is reached by plane from hervey bay or bundaberg. You can look them up at

www.voyages.com.au for heron island and

The sunshine coast certainly can be enjoyed on a budget-there are quite a few posts on this forum.

Herver bay is also worth considering especially from august to october with whale watching season.

Great keppel used to be the party island but is now under new management and apparently much more family orientated. There is snorkelling but not right off the beach as on lady elliot.although the tariff is a lot lower meals are extra. You can certainly drive from brisbane but it would be best to do it over 2 days or stop on the way at the sunshine coast or hervey bay.You can check out great keppel on

WE have visited Sunshine Coast 3 times so far and are heading a bit further north to Hervey Bay this September. We have kids aged 9 and 14. So much to do and see there plus you can drive to the Gold Coast for the a day at the amusement parks in less than 2 hours. We have stayed at Surfside on the Beach, near Moolooaba, which is fantastic accommodation right on the beach. It is much quieter than the Gold Coast and has more of a real Aussie feel. We love New Zealand but also love that September Australian sun!

Have a good time!
