5 days in Brisbane... Nightlife? Hotels? Tours?

I'll be holidaying in Brisbane for about 5 days (mid-May) and I'm trying to sort out the details of my trip... and by sort out, I mean actually come up with some. I'm 25 yrs old and plan on doing my fair share partying.

Looking for recommendations on where to stay? The city? Where in the city? (I've heard good things about Fortitude Valley) Maybe the Gold Coast? Will the beach even be "in season?"

Any recommendations for conveniantly located hotels in the city? (3-4 star)

Wine tours? Day tours?

Any recommendations would be most appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi there - You'll love Bris-Vegas! (as its nicknamed) and 5 days is just long enough as there isn't an awful lot to do by day.

There's the usual Botantical Gardens which is nice. Brisbane also has a man-made beach in the Southbank area of the city which looks quite surreal and definately worth a look & swim (if warm enough).

At night Brisbane truly comes alive with plenty of options to party - but at the same time not too many options (like Sydney) nor are they spread out therefore if one place isn't happening then you are not too far from where it will be. The three main areas for a night out are CBD/City area, Fortitude Valley (prob the best) and Caxton Street (just off Petrie Terrace and a personal favourite of mine as my old local area).

As for Hotels - I fully recommend staying in one of the nicer hostels as they provide a great atmosphere, homely surroundings, alot cheaper than hotels and a great way to meet people - especially if you're single! One in particular where I used to stay alot is the YELLOW SUBMARINE at 66 Quay Street off Roma Street. Its within walking distance of everywhere and run by some really friendly staff, in particular Judy (the old lady who owns & runs it).

I would also recommend visiting the Treasurey Casio one night as it provides all round evening entertainment with the usual gaming rooms/tables, separate bar areas where you can watch sport! and another large bar with live music playing.

Any more questions then feel free to email me at nasher007@hotmail.com. I loved Brisbane and miss the place alot - its one of those places that if you live & work there you'll love it but as a tourist, you will probably get bored after a week! I arrived in Brisbane from the UK on a 1 year working visa and ended up staying nearly 5 years. I made some great friends but had to return to England due to difficulties with Immigration!

Have fun and let me know how you get on.

Plenty of hotels in the city and well located - check wotif.com for cheap deals unless your travel agent can do better. The Stamford is the VIP hotel in town. There is a casino and just over the river is southbank with a beach, art gallery, cultural centre and restaurants. Do a tour of the city to get your bearings. A nice tour to some of the best beaches near Bris is Stradbroke Island. see stradbroketours.com.au for details. The av temps are 14-24C so it's a bit cool to swim but is still a good time to visit. Consider a Gold Coast trip - it's only a 1hr drive.

Tour an Australian grocery store. Try Tim-tams and other Australian junk food. I haven't seen Tim-tams anywhere in the US. Skip the Vegemite.

Freak out all of the singing, tropical birds in Brisbane with a North American bird call (eg robin). They'll stress and hush to dead silence ("What the hell was that?") before slowly getting back to normal.

Try driving on the left side of the road...with a manual transmission.

Try some crocodile, kangaroo, opossum...

FIRST RULE--if you see a fun group of people never be afraid to introduce yourself--Brissie folk love to show off and you might find yourself exploring places you never expected. Women especially love welcoming new women (the Aussie males are often a bit socially inept).

Food--must do King of Kings for yum-cha [aka dim sum] in Fortiitude Valley ESP good if you're suffering a hangover. Sat or Sunday mornings.

Steaks of course at the Breakfast Creek and plan a day of beer and sunshine. Just sit there and enjoy the atmosphere (Sunday lunchtime). Don't forget the sunblock if you're outside.

Yep Fortitude Valley is the party spot just lurch from one pub/club to another.

For something more 'fun' track down a trivia night at the Kangaroo Point pub on Monday nights and ask someone if you can join their group.

If you can stand university crowds tToowoong is big on Thursday nights. Catch the City Cat (hydrofoil) to Toowong. Consider walking home along the Brissy river if you've met up with some friendly folk but don't fall in!!!

Powerhouse offers alternative theatre, comedy. MUST do Park Road Milton and have a cuppa under the pseudo Eiffel Tower.

READ : Nick Earls' _Zig Zag Street_ and David Malouf's _Johnno_ for some local colour. Rent Swimming Upstream (w Geoffrey Rush).
