Hervey Bay worth a 5 day visit?

Hi We are planning on staying in Hervey bay for 5 days in Feb 2006. Thanks to these forums we have found out that there aren't any tours up to the Whitsundays, so was wondering what else we could do while there. Obviously we will be going over to Fraser Island, but is this all there is? Or would you recommend us spending our time elsewhere. Bearing in mind we have already booked our flights into Hervey Bay, then at the end of our stay we are getting the train down to Noosa where we are going to stay for another 5 days. Any help or recommendations would be great...thanks in advance x

It certainly depends on what you like doing. If you like nature then probably spend 2 or 3 nights on fraser island. You can stay in luxury at the kingfisher bay resort and they run a variety of 4 wheel drive tours which will keep you busy. There are though cheaper options for accommodation on fraser island.Try looking at www.hervey.com.au

This will give you lots of local links and give you an idea of whats available. From hervey bay you can do a daytrip to lady elliot island which is the southernmost part of the great barrier reef and is worth a visit. The day trip though will be about $250 a person I believe.

Fishing is great at hervey bay with cheap to expensive options. You can stay on a cattle property-the susan river station. There are local indigenous tours and of course just lazing around enjoying a feed of mud crab or prawns with a nice cold beer-or even a glass of chardonnay.

As I said it does depend a lot on your particular likes.
