Darwin and surrounds in mid nov

Hi, we are a family of 5 from Singapore and has booked flights to darwin mid nov for 10 days. My kids are small -4, 6 &8. We are keen to try camper van but after reading some forum posts we are a bit hesitant. Will the weather be really hot and wet and not ideal for camper van ? Can we still see the sights in kakuda and Litchfield in 2 wd camper van. Would you recommend car and staying at motels etc instead? Kids have really been looking fwd to camper van travel. If we go to powered site is the air conditioning good enough for a comfortable sleep in the hot nights ? Typically how hot can it be in the day and night ? Would appreciate any advice and / or comments. Thanks!

Yes November will be humid more so than in Singapore but more like what you will experience in the northern states of Malaysia before the monsoon arrives. Kakadu and Litchfield will be open to a 2Wd though be prepared for heavy thunderstorms which may close a sealed road for an hour or so.

It depends on what type of campervan you hire as whether it will have air conditioning that can be run from the 240v powered sites, At that time of the year the sites will not be busy but check beforehand which caravan parks will still be open and which ones have powered sites.

Note that some parts of Kakadu may be closed if the temperature and humidity is too high for safety. The temperature during the day might reach up to 40C but more likely it will be around 38C with the high humidity being the problem. Just drink plenty of water and don't over extend yourself or the children.

Thank you Lsbob for the information. Glad to know that darwin is still do-able for nov. As for the camper van we will be choosing those w air conditioning at the main cabin we are actually contemplating between a 4 berth or 6 berth. The kids are small so for sleeping they can share 1 bed but the 4berth ones only has 2 restraints so was wondering if aussie rules are v strict and we cannot drive the 4 berth. We would prefer the 4 berth as it is smaller and more manageable for driving.

We are arriving at 4.30am on sat am. Is there place in darwin airpo for us ti rest while waiting for the camper van rental company to open or would you think it is better for us to book s room for friday night so we can rest immediately after arrival? Appreciate any comments and suggestions. Thanks

Hi Wanderlust

Australian road laws are strict - you will need child restraints for all of your children. Besides is the risk to their safety really worth having a smaller vehicle?

Darwin airport is quite small compared to other international airports. The only option for a place to rest would be on the floor in arrivals - not really recommended. There are a couple of hotels close to the airport (all very imaginatively named):

- the Rydges Darwin Airport Resort

- the Rydges Darwin Airport Hotel

- the Best Western Darwin Airport Hotel

The first two I believe have a free shuttle, or at a pinch are walking distance from the airport. The third is a very short drive away.

I hope you enjoy your trip.

Sorry in the above message I meant to say you will need restraints for all your children. The 8yo will just need a normal seat belt, the younger ones will need proper child restraints. You will need to check with the hire company to see if it can provide these. If not you may need to bring some from home.

Hi Shazdwn , thanks for the advice. Think we will go for the 6 berth type w shower facilities as only those seem to have air conditioning in the main cabin. Since mode of travel and accommodation is set. I will plan the itinerary and may need more advice and suggestions later. Thanks !
