Self Drive Alice Springs to Darwin

Our family (2 adults and 2 children aged 10 and 8) are planning a road trip in September going from Alice Springs to Darwin. We know NOTHING of the area so would love some helpful advice on what we should see. We will have 12 days (plus 2 extras for travel to Alice home from Darwin). We plan to hire a campervan so we can stop anywhere. If anyone has ideas on what we should see or proposed itinerary we would LOVE to hear from you. Also if anyone has hired a campervan for this trip before can you recommend a company and should we pay the additional daily charge to get a reduced/nil excess?

It's a great drive from Alice Springs to Darwin. While the changes in the countryside are quite dramatic, younger folk can be less than impressed. I strongly suggest a couple of talking books. They are fabulous and can mean the difference between arriving in harmony or arriving in tatters at the end of a day.

In Alice Springs, go to the Alice Springs Desert Park. A visit there will help you better understand the country you are driving through. Besides, it is good fun for the whole family.

12 days is great. That is enough time to spend a few days in Alice and surrounds, 3 or 4 days on the road, and a few days in Darwin. Great trip.
