northern territory

We are planning a 4WD trip to the Northern Territory. We will be leaving from the Gold Coast, and thinking about driving up to Darwin and heading south. We are wondering if it was possible to do the round trip in 3 weeks. We really don't want to rush it and we obviously want to see the highlights along the way. Is three weeks enough?

As you say you don't want to rush it then IMHO 3 weeks is not long enough. between our trips to the top end and red centre we had longer than that and we flew. I like to do things fairly in depth and we don't rush. If you're of a similar style of traveller as we are then you might want to allow a bit more time if you possibly can. That said, it is probably possible to tick off the must sees in that time frame. With a 4WD I would expect you would be wanting to get to some of the additional beauty spots.. I would recommend Palm Valley. Lovely spot.

A lot depends on how long you want to spend in towns along the way. There are some interesting places along the way such as Mt. Isa, (probably overnight) Cloncurry (a couple of hours for a break), Winton, Longreach (2 days if you have not been there before), Mitchell (a couple of hours) or the other highway 3 days could be spent in the Richmond Hughenden area. Tennant Creek has cheaper fuel than 3 ways and also food plus at least 1/2 day spent looking around. Then up to Darwin if you are desperate you could do it in a long day but stop at Katherine, 1 day, Pine Creek Adelaide River for a few hours and some of the other little settlements along the way. You could do Darwin Alice in 2 days though some drivers have been known to flog their vehicles and do it in one day but the highway is unfenced.. You will have to stop at the fuel stop over run by the extra terrestrials!!. Then how long do you want to spend in Darwin and visit Kakadu and Litchfield NPs.

There is a long distance between settlements once you leave Mt. Isa and up to Katherine, there is limited camping facilities along the way but buy the Camps Australia book for ideas.
