Places to stay?

Hi I'm starting at the University of Sydney in July for a year abroad. I've heard it's very expensive has anyone got any advice on places to stay as a student on the cheap? Thanks !:)

Hi Indiarose,

This TA forum is more focused on short-term travel/accomodation (hotels/serviced apartments). For information on a place to stay when you first arrive - see "FAQ - Budget travel" at right - you will probably want a hostel of which there are dozens of good choices across Sydney (YHA is always highly recommended here).

For longer term options - I'm sure your uni will provide lots of accomodation options that they are affiliated with. For other ideas some other forums and resources you might use are :

Travellers Point forum - has more of a focus on backpackers & budget travel:

Whirlpool forums - several relevant areas such as Education and Real Estate areas:

Reddit Sydney forum: www.reddit.com/r/sydney

The major sites you should use for searching for flatmates or your own accomodation are:

www.gumtree.com.au (this is our Craigslist equivalent... be very wary of scams!)

Note that everything is advertised "per week" on sites like that.

Good luck - finding affordable yet comfortable accomodation is likely going to be one of your biggest challenges with your move here.

Agree to start with the uni for assistance and then consider areas close to uni (for ease of travel) eg Newtown, Glebe, Chippendale, Enmore, St Peters, Marrickville, Annandale. These areas are what we call Inner West and will have train and/or bus to university.

Alternative could be beach side areas such as Coogee/Bronte but then need to consider travel to uni.

Sydney Uni has a very comprehensive student housing service where you can get information about both on campus and off campus housing. I'm sure they have sent you this link sydney.edu.au/current_students/….

Don't expect cheap housing. Sydney Uni is situated in in of the most expensive areas of one of the worlds most expensive cities.

Unless you are prepared to commute from the outer suburbs you should budget at least $200 a week for accommodation and utilities. Then add food, transport costs and personal spending on top of that and you can understand why so many students choose to stay at home while that study.

Good lunch with your search.
