5 days in Sydney with senior parents, need advice!

Hello all,

I am on a 5 days trip with my parents to Sydney and have worked out an itinerary and would appreciate all suggestions and advice!

Day 1 (Sat)

- Arrive Sydney 7 am.

- Should I take a taxi to Town Hall or pay 3 adults fare to Town Hall?

- Deposit luggage as too early to check in

- Take Bus 555 to Circular Quay, walk to The Rocks weekend market and have a bit of breakfast and walk around. Please advise how long to spend there???

- Take a ferry from Circular Quay to Kings St Wharf, destination is Sydney Fish Market. Should I walk or any transportation to get there?

- Lunch @ Fish Market.

- Light Rail to Paddy's and Market Street.

- Drinks and light bar snacks at 360 Bar Sydney Tower for sunset views

Day 2 ( Sun)

- Back to Paddy's Market for more shopping

- Sydney Opera House Market ( is it worth a visit???)

- Ferry to Watsons Bay

- Walk to Gap Bluff and have dinner there

- Glimpse or Eastern Bay Thai ( any suggestions? I saw Dolye's menu it is very expensive)

- Any advice what time dinner service starts as I planning to catch the 7 pm ferry back to Circular Quay.

Day 3 (Mon)

- Day Tour to Port Stephens

- Late dinner at Chinatown

Day 4 (Tue)

- Day tour to Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves

- Late Dinner at Darling Harbour ( any recommendations???)

- Visit Star Casino

Day 5 (Wed)

- My flight to Melbourne is at 1pm. What time should I leave from Pitt Street to Airport? Should I train there or taxi there?

- Is there enough time after check out at 9am/10am to visit QVB/ Strand Arcade area for a small walk?

Was wondering if my itinerary is overtly ambitious for my parents as they are a bit old and energy levels are limited.

All kind advice appreciated!

With Senior parents from airport and assuming luggage- taxi

How long to spend at the Markets? Depends on what you want to look at.. sorry I enjoy a 20 minute wander but it isn;t that great unless I have something I want in mind.

if going to Fishmarket get off the ferry at Pyrmont if you want to walk. alternative is 555 back to Capital SQ then light rail.

The days you are in Blue Mountains and Port Stephens will be VERY LONG DAYS.

Port Stephens is about a 3 hr drive north- one way.

Unless they like sleeping in buses this may stretch them with the late night dinners. You are honesty better off staying at your hotel for dinners on those days.

No you wont have time to go to QVB after you check out . Well maybe for 30 minutes or so. I would sacrifice one day at Paddys market- which is not worth it for 2 trips really. QVB mucg nicer. Your parents can sit down and have a tea while you shop...

No point rushing with your parents as it will tire them being in a new city etc. Take it easy!

With senior parents I would definitely recommend a taxi as the best transfer option from the Airport, the train will cost more and take more time, not worth it.

The Rocks market with breakfast is a great option, whilst it's all personal, you will probably spend about an hour or so there.

Not sure if you are 100% on going to the Fish Markets in Pyrmont? It's not the most picturesque of locations, I would have said that a ferry to Manly, with fish & chips and shopping at the other end would be a nicer day.

If you do really want to go the the fish markets you should be aware that they are a little out of the way, so walking may be too strenuous for your parents - the light rail is out of the question because it is no longer in operation.

In my opinion, Paddy's markets aren't that spectacular, although you haven't mentioned where you are staying or what you are looking to buy, I wouldn't be putting it at the top of my priority list, especially when you only have 5 days in Sydney! Maybe leave it until your last day, if you get there early enough and want to have a quick look.

I would agree that a day trip to Port Stephens is a very long day, with the limited time you have, you would be better off visiting the Sydney Aquarium and Wildlife Zoo at Darling Harbour, or going out to Featherdale Wildlife Park where you can interact with the animals. The Blue Mountains is feasible with an early start...

If you do choose to try and do some day trips, don't try and commit to getting back to specific locations like Chinatown or Darling Harbour, there are plenty of restaurants that can be found all over the City and also in places like Newtown and Surry Hills, which offer plenty of choice and are less touristy.

All in all, my advice is work out what you most want see or experience in Sydney - and take your time.

Hi,

Goodness me! How old and infirm are your parents? After a long haul flight you may have trouble keeping up with them. Jet Lag effects vary enormously.

I agree with the others:

Take a cab both to and from the airport.

No you will not have time for the QVB.

Cheers,

Day 1 - The fish Market is out of the way and some walk from King St Wharf (with elderly parents). Maybe catch a taxi there.

Day 2 - you will have to contact Thai restaurant about times. You could also eat at the Watsons Bay Hotel.

Day 3 and 4 will be tiring - I would drop Port Stephens as at least 6 hours driving there/back. BM is more interesting.

Day 3 - maybe there is a tour down to Stanwell Tops/Grand Pacific Drive

Also ask yourselves is it enjoyable? Also are there alternatives that are more doable?

Port Stephens for the beach or what? Lots of beaches are closer. And without crowding onto a coach tour. Perhaps more info from you about what sort of experience you are hoping for there?

Blue Mountains AND Jenolan Caves? Are there single day tours that manage to fit in both? If so it sounds a very busy day. Does the tour include a specific cave or do you get a choice, because I remember a lot of stairs. Are you keen on caves? Perhaps just do the Blue Mountains?

Thanks for all the great advice so far!

A bit more info: I am mid thirties and parents are mid sixties. Dad has a weak foot thus less strain walking is better.

We booked 2 Grayline tours:

Ports Stephens dolphins with 4wd sand dunes

Blue mountains and Jenolan caves with a guided cave tour

Both are full day tours depart at 8am returning at 630pm or later. Pick up and drop off at world square near Chinatown.

Sydney fish market and Paddy's came highly recommended in the readings I've done thus included.

My mom is a super browser and can spend 2 hours in a single shop thus 2 days to Paddy's to buy home souvenirs.

We came Sydney a couple years back did the aquarium and a few other places with a tour company, this is the first time to be totally free & easy thus a bit anxious on the itinerary planned.

Maybe take a public bus to Palm Beach instead of Port Stephens. It's just over an hour each way and you can have a nice lunch at The Boathouse and a walk and swim (sorry forget which month you are coming). Two very long trips in two days is way too much. Plus Jenolan Caves is a long trip to return in a day. Just do the Mountains properly I would say.
