transit visa

I'm a usa citizen and will travel through Australia (staying only 1 day.) I understand that I will need a visa (either a transit one or eta) but is there an easy way to apply for the free transit visa without having to mail over my passport and passport picture? In other words, ETA seems really easy to apply for but costs 20 dollars; the transit visa is free but if I don't see how to apply for it without a cumbersome process. Thanks for the help.

1. Re: transit visa

Unfortunately the Australian government's Visa Wizard doesn't support transit visa applications. So it's much easier to use the Visa Wizard to apply for an ETA. $20 is not much when balanced against the pain of submitting forms and your passport.
