would the pacific jewel be departing from wharf 5 or from the overseas passenger terminal?

if departure is from wharf 5, the nearest would be in the darling harbour area.

if from the OPT, there are many hotels around circular quay and the rocks.

so this looks like departing at White Bay 5 (starts being used in late March replacing Barangaroo due to development work). If so, this is a new wharf for cruise ships (was used for car imports from Japan)

So realistically the closest hotels are around Darling Harbour and then a a taxi over the Anzac Bridge

When in Sydney we stay at the great southern in George st post cruise. About 5min walk from central station. China town is at the back door and darling harbour around 10min walk away. If you find your way down to darling harbour it's an easy walk to the p&o terminal, all flat and no vehicular traffic fairly easy even with luggage in tow. The pub grub at the great southern is hearty and reasonably priced. The airport train from the domestic terminal to the city cost around $16each and takes about 10min.

I think you should check with the Cruise line as sometimes the P&O ships dock at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay .. it just depends on the amount of cruise line traffic coming into the harbour and who has booked that berth .. or not

Once you work out which terminal you are using consider Expedia and wotif for last minute bargains as well. You may get a taste of upmarket Sydney for a reasonable price.

As everyones tastes & budgets differ, strongly suggest you get onto wotif & have a look at what fits you budget, then suss out google maps to see how far places are from CQ. Narrow down to a lsit of 3-4, THEN, come back for final recommendations. As a general tip, consider staying north of the Town Hall as it reduces your commute to the OPT @ CQ.

If the ship is leaving from Circular Quay you do have heaps of options around CQ & the Rocks depending on your budget. Have a look on wotif to see what hotel suits you.

a good quality moderately priced hotel is the Old Sydney Holiday Inn.

Another moderately priced hotel would be the Travelodge at Wynyard which is an easy 5 min walk to the Quay.

Regardless of whether you get a hotel at CQ or close by, you could catch the train from the airport to Circular Quay or another station on the City Circle line ... around $15 pp (cost is due to the line operated by a private consortium at the Airport Stations).
