What part of town?

My family (wife + 2 kids 5 & 9) are planning a trip to Australia over the Christmas holiday and will be in Sydney for 3 nights before flying out to Melbourne. What is a recommended part of Sydney that you can recommend for a family? We will use this as a jumping off point to explore the rest of the city.

Circular Quay/The Rocks, the CBD (Central Business District) or Darling Harbour depending on your plans for your time here.

Definitely opt to stay within the city centre. In all honesty though, location is not as big of a concern as finding accommodation within your budget range (unless you have a flexible budget). Hotels in Sydney are not cheap.

Look at www.wotif.com/ to see what is available during your dates.

We just stayed in the Rocks. It was extremely convenient and within walking distance of many of the main sites, being equidistant between Darling Harbour and the Circular Quay. This saved us the trouble of waiting for buses and the cost of cabs.

It is a very nice neighborhood with a great historical feel as well.

With only 3 days, you don't want to waste lots of time traveling from the hinterland.

Snowyandsniggles - where did you stay at the Rocks? The Rocks is right next to Circular Quay, but a 30 min or so walk to Darling Harbour.

When you say, "over the Christmas holidays", are you including NYE in Sydney?

I ask because accommodation in & around The Rocks & Circular Quay on NYE is prohibitively expensive and at an absolute premium in terms of availability.

If you're leaving before 31st, I'd suggest you have a look at self catering apartments, which are ideal for families. There is more space than a hotel room and the cooking and laundry facilities can be cash & time savers.

Have a look at www.wotif.com.au under "Sydney CBD". This will give you an idea of what properties are available, and has maps so you can judge the locations.

Most of us book direct with the properties, using Wotif (or other booking agencies) as a price reference and source of information.

Hi,

As mentioned apartments are the way to go with families. Christmas & NYE 2012 will already be heavily booked. Check availabilty through this link.

The Rocks / Circular Quay / Darling Harbour/ CBD are all good locations.
