Sydney airport to Tuggerah, take the train or hire a car?

We, group of 7 adults, have to go to Tuggerah from Sydney airport on a Saturday around midday & returning to Sydney airport Sunday afternoon. It would cost roughly the same to hire a van as catching a train to central & then to Tuggerah. Is it easier/quicker to drive or catch the trains?

Hi,

You do have 2 options depending on what time you are arriving into Sydney ??

A) hire a mini van - pick it up from Sydney Airport & drive to Tuggerah.

99.3 km, 1 hour 24 mins In current traffic: 1 hour 32 mins Metroad 1 and F3.

B) catch the train from the Airport to Central & hop onto a train to Tuggerah..

Thanks Ellemay,

We will arrive Sydney airport around 10am. Would we need to pay any tolls?

If you have an e-tag bring it with you. Works fine in NSW. Just don't leave it in the rental when you hand it back :-0

Going north you pay the Eastern Distributor toll and coming back south you pay the Harbor Bridge toll (both one way only tolls).

Otherwise call the number displayed or go online and pay tolls within 48 hours.

Thanks Evamelb, think we will take the train. It sounds like less stress than driving!

As one who lives not too far from Tuggerah, I would agree with the train as the less stressful option, especially when you factor in that the roadworks currently underway on the M2 motorway ramp up on weekends and a considerale part of that road is at a signposted 40 kmh crawl. The other road option of Pacific Hwy gets jam packed after around 9am and the 84 mins drive time quoted in reality blows out to 2 hr to 2 1/4 hrs & thats thru first-hand experience.

Tuggerah station is a little isolated - where is your end desto ? Being local, might be able to offer further assistance.

Thanks Shaz! We are actually attending a reunion at Killarney Vale & my mum will have to do 2 trips from the train station to pick us up.

I agree with Shaz. The 2 trips between Killarny Vale & Tuggerah does not seem to be onerous.

I have just checked on trackwork closedowns over the next 6 months.

The airport line will be buses over 28/29 July as will the Central Coast line over 21/22 July.

Particularly with a Central Coast closedown road traffic is usually much heavier.

If you contact Central Coast Taxis & explain your situation, you will be able to pre-book a maxi taxi from the rail to K Vale. The fare will be less than $6 each. Tell them the time of the train arrival & provide your mobile number & you shouldnt have too many dramas. If you cop grief from an operator, pm me & I can sort it (have contacts there).
