Sydney to Ayers Rock (Uluru) - Best way to reach

Hello,

What is the best way to visit Ayers rock from Sydney? Are their local airlines besides Qantas which offer direct flight to Ayers rock? What is there to see other than the rock itself and perhaps .....Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) . How many nights will you recommend?. I am guessing 2 -3 night for these 2 including Alice Spring.

Thanks

Qantas and Virgin fly direct.

There are indigenous tours etc (have a look at the ayers rock resort web page for ideas) The must do are sunrise and sunset.

The number of nights really depends on your interests, some need 3 others have it ticked off in one. Time of year can be a big deciding factor in that as the middle of the day from October on often is so hot you really don't feal like much. It tends to be a very dry heat rather than humiidity. (Yes I know Tx is hot)

You mention Alice Springs, but it is best to think of that as another destination. You don't need to do Alice to do Ayers Rock and v.v.

It is another logistical episode (whether driving or flying) to incorporate both from Sydney.

If you are going there you want to see the Rock and the Olgas in different lights, and undertake a walk at each (early morning in summer). You can climb the rock or walk around it. You can do the Valley of the Winds walk at the Olgas.

There are other anciliary attractions set up there, like sounds of silence, and indigenous interpretations.

We flew with Virgn Blue in January and spent 3 nights at the Ayers Rock resort which gets mixed reviews on TA. Most gripes relate to the cost of food and accommodation but compared with European prices, we did not think that it was overly expensive. We booked with AAT Kings and found the service first class. (PS Due to a heatwave at the time, we experienced temps of 46 degress (celsius), so be warned!)

Went to the rock in Feb and flies everywhere. Wish I had one of those head net things.

Went again last week and the flies were almost non-existent.

Mental note... if going in summer get one of those net things. You'll be thankful you did. And plenty of water.

So, here is our program. We are going for a (mainly) conference. This is our second trip to Sydney. NEVER been to Alice Springs/Ayers rock before.

Depart DALLAS 29th OCT – Reach SYDNEY 31OCT

Depart SYDNEY 06NOV – Reach DALLAS 06NOV.

How will you allocate days for 1) Sydney and 2)Alice springs/Ayers Rock.

Both of us are young (40's) and will prefer to fly. Of course, had we come on long vacation, we would have driven BUT we will save that adventure for later part of the life.

You folks REALLY rock on this site..........thanks a lot mates.

Hi Vic. 2 days is plenty to do Uluru. If you leave Sydney in the morning you can do an afternoon tour in Uluru. The next morning you can do a sunrise tour at Uluru or Kata Tjuta. Be sure to book ahead if you are interested in the Sounds of Silence dinner, but we had a great meal at Kuniya for 1/2 the price. The Pionner BBQ is fun as well. Whether you self drive or do a tour is up to you, rent the car ahead of time if you are going to drive around. Not sure about the flies in October but better to have a net than wish you did!
