First time to Sydney with Children who want to surf.

Could a local expert help me please. Coming out to Sydney Feb March for 2 weeks. Staying with family but would also like a couple of days away maybe 3 days with the childre, near a beach we hoped. Family live near Oatley, and we will not have car of our own so will use public transport which we are told is great. Would like to know where to go,and find a little beach apartment/hotel nothing too posh please in a safe area. Children surf/bodyborad in UK but will not have any equipment with us except boardies and rash vest - can we hire? Do we have to find a beach with Shark Nets?

Any other tips for Syndey with 9 year old and 13 year old please pass them on they want to do everything except walk the harbour bridge thank goodness.

For your beach stay, you could probably hire equipment from a surf shoup at the busier ones such as Bondi, Coogee or Manly. You might also consider Cronulla, as it is closer to Oatley.

Shark nets are an interesting story altogether! We are told that the beaches in Sydeny all have shark nets, but there has recently been quite a brouhaha over how effective they really are, if they are in fact there at all. The best advice is to swim with other people, avoid swimming in 'murky' water at dawn or dusk, or the next day after a big rain. The reality is, though, that you are much more likely to get hit by a bus crossing the road on the way to the beach than you are to be attacked by a shark.

Oatley is in Sydneys Southern Suburbs so Closest beach would be around Sutherland,Cronulla etc. Get a train there, yes you can carry surfboards on the train.Cronulla will be a little cheaper as you know there was a "riot"there in DEc 05.

However things have calmed down and it is a very expensive area to buy a unit or house.

I would stay in somewhere like Formaule 1 motel or small motels. Why go for those big hotels paying 200 dollars a night when you can get something half price.

Look in www.yellowpages.com for motels in the Sutherland shire area.OR if you want to be closer to the CITY go to COOGEE Or Maroubra beach. There are no train stations in these suburbs. You will have to catch a state transit bus if they allow surfboards.

Bondi Beach is also great.

I live northside near Manly and you wont have a problem hiring surfing equipment this side. For example just opposite North Steyne suf club is a surf shop call "Dripping Wet" they rent out equipment everyday.

I'm sure you will have no problem finding equipment hire at whatever beach you choose to visit.

Manly Beach hire tent offers almost anything ..on the beach south of the corso operates from (ist oct - 31st may)7 days weekly. Manly Beach has shark nets. Also mentioned above dripping wet has boogie boards and wetsuits for hire.( 1 hour $5.00, 2hours $8.00AUD)shop 2 93 North Steyne opened 7 days between 9am-6pm.

Cronulla is another area which would be suited to tour location at Oatley.see www.sutherland.nsw.gov.au for more information about the area.

For a few days away from oatley the best suggestion might be to head south. The rail line service the south coast as far as Nowra. perhaps look at Wollongong which has a few apartment hotels not far from the beach(including places like fairy meadow, Thirroul..not sure about holiday rentals though..)

Ot further south to Kiama or Gerringong. You will need to change trains at Sutherland or head to Hurstville and then back. oatley has trains about every 30 mins during the day..the better service runs from Mortdale (next stop).

Most surf shops have equipment (mostly boards) for hire.

If day tripping to the beach Cronulla is the best option but add a little bit of time and walk up towards Wanda or Elouera (les crowded than the beach at the end of the rail stop IMHO). train journey will take around 30 mins max ..avoid returning from the beach at around 3 to 3,30pm as the schools finish and the train services two major high schools so around 500 kids get on that train at Caringbah alone...

There have been hundreds of posts on things to do in Sydney with kids so have a read back over those...my kids fave would be the zoo or ferry either to manly or Rivercat up to Olympic Park.

something else you might consider is to walk over Como bridge and hire a little runabout for a few hours then head up or down the river.. great coffee at Como cafe and a reasonable playground nearby

My 7 year old attends one of the Surfing Australia schools in Perth. They also have schools all over Australia.

Even though your kids have surfed before, Surfing Australia is great for all levels, and not a bad idea to keep your kids 'safe' in unknown waters.

Their classes include all the equipment etc
