Driving Byron Bay to Blue Mountains

We (50 ish parents with 2 early 20's children) are travelling from Byron Bay to the Blue Mountains. We have 2 - 3 nights to get there - what & where would any suggest we go, do or stay. I appreciate any ideas.

guess there are two options.

one is down the pacific hwy (coastal route) then thru the hunter valley (wine country) to the bm's to avoid going thru sydney.

the other is the inland route (new england hwy) which u can get to from byron bay via lismore, or grafton, or belligen (just south of coffs harbour) and again into bm's thru the hunter.

guess it depends on whether by that stage u r sick of the beach or not and want some aus rural scenery. places to stop on the inland route would be tenterfield, armidale, tamworth (country music centre of aus) or the hunter valley (cessnock) itself.
