Emergency Canberra restaurant/food advice please

Son off to Canberra tomorrow to see Masterpieces exhibition for special occasion - was planning to go somewhere nice for dinner but the five restuarants he's tried so far are booked out (I think Water's Edge, Aubergine, Rubicon, Artespresso,???).

If a restaurant is not possible, he quite likes the idea of a picnic dinner by the lake, so could anybody advise either or both of a good restaurant that is perhaps off the tourist radar and alternatively, good deli where they could buy the makings of a picnic - antipasto etc?

Thanks!

Thanks

In the city, Mezzalira (contemporary Italian) or Sabayon or Courgette (same owner as Watersedge). Near the NGA, Ginger Room or Ottoman. Hear good things about On Red (on Red Hill) but haven't eaten there yet.

PS I'm a bit rusty on the deli options, but Silo Bakery (Kingston) has great breads/pastries and fabulous cheeses (in a cheese room). Not sure if Italian and Sons (offshoot of Mezzalira, at braddon) does their salumi as a takeaway.

Boathouse by the Lake - not at Yacht Club. Yacht club is basic club food.

On Red is good - Alto at Black Mtn Tower is also worthwhile.

Axis at the National Museum is quite good.

Lobby Restaurant (across road from OPH is another top player in town

Deli options for picnic - probably go to the Canberra Centre Food Hall - Fyshwick and Belconnen Markets both have deli's; Providors at Manuka probably the top end ($ and product) at the moment. Silo isn't open for dinner - it is a cheese room and bakery so for your picnic option
