Driving from Adelaide to Perth

Myself and 5 others (3 couples) are coming over to see some of the cricket in December (1st - 17th) and are planning on hiring 3 campervans and driving between Adelaide and Perth. We expect to take between 5 days and a week (between test matches) to do the drive.

I would be grateful for any advice on:-

1] where the best places are to stopover on the drive,

2] whether the sites need to be booked in advance,

3] Also, are there any decent campsites in Adelaide and Perth quite close to the city centres (or convenient for the cricket!)

Any help gratefully accepted

Richard

Have a look at this website:

www.nullarbornet.com.au/

Booking ahead would be a very good plan as spots are limited and at that time of year I would expect that a lot of people are on the move.

Thanks YorkeFoodie, as soon as I have an itinerary, I will try and book ahead, but I guess that I could park up in the rest areas at night if necessary.

What rest areas? And if you do find one, with road trains roaring past you'll find it's not a great idea. Plus if the road patrols in WA find you there, they won't be happy.

Echo YF.

There is limited spots to pull over on the Nullarbor. You need to book ahead to ensure you have a site at the few roadhouses. You do realise it is going to cost you a small fortune in fuel? Have you considered taking the Indian Pacific train? As a group, it would be great fun and well worth it IMO. All would be rested, fed and could appreciate the scenery...

In relation to your other query re caravan park locations, just google caravan parks Perth/Adelaide to obtain info. Limited choices and hence popular.

Have you checked drop off charges for the campervan? We did this drive by car and found out drop off for the car was AUD 880,-- so we decided to drive back.

Maybe also read this:

Also keep an eye on regulations at the Fruit Fly station at Border Village before entering WA.

Many thanks for your helpful replies.

1] I have considered the Indian Pacific Train - more expensive than the campervan hire (shockingly). Also, didn't fit in with the cricket.

2) Fuel costs and 1 way charge all factored in my calculation, yes, all expensive, but no more expensive than the UK and this is a trip i've always wanted to do.

3) I have emailed campsites in Adelaide and Perth so fingers crossed. And will be in contact with various restcamps/roadhouses etc inbetween as early as I can (well in advance).

Cheers

Richard
