Road Access to Horton Plains

We're going to be travelling through the hill country by motorbike. Google Earth shows a road (B508 from Boralanda - Ohiya -Maha Eliya - Pattipola ) through what II think is the Horton Plains area. Does anyone know whether this is a public highway or part of a National Park with restricted access?

Thanks

Dave

It has quite restricted access. For around 50% of the year it is so muddy that for cars you need a 4WD to use it. For the other 50% a normal 2WD can use it. Hard to predict exactly when it can be used for 2WD and when not, normally Dec-Jan is quite wet at least. Not capable of translating what this means for a motorcycle, you're able to do so probably.

So Eric, are you saying that this is an unpaved road? We are riding an off-road style bike but the tyres might not be very good judging by lasdt years experience.

Yes it's quite unpaved mainly for the southern part. Hence the impact of the mud, if the sand turns into that :-(
