Hi That all depends on the stops you are going to make and that's the purpose of driving hw1. Without stops count on app 6 hours.
I live just south of SLO and have made that drive. It took 8 hours with a 1 hour dinner stop in Pacific Grove. We left SF just after 12:30 pm and we didn't roll into home until 8:30 pm.
There's a lot to see/do along the coast route. Whoever is driving will need to pay more than the usual attention to their driving along the Big Sur coast, so frequent stops would be necessary in order for the driver to enjoy the views, too (Don't want to drive off one of those sheer cliffs).
This is a drive that would be best if you could leave SF much earlier in the day, especially if you've never done it before. Otherwise, you're just going to blow through some of the best scenery California has to offer: Monterey, Carmel, Point Lobos and all the great places to stop and enjoy in Big Sur.
