Sorry, but No. Highway 1 is the only route into Big Sur (Actually, there are 2, but the other route is even slower than just sticking with Highway 1). Big Sur is actually more of a region than a town. It's 90 miles of remote coastline between Cambria and Carmel.

I sure hope you're NOT trying to drive Santa Monica to SF in one day. That's a good 10 1/2 hour drive WITHOUT stops!!

Take Highway 101 as far as San Luis Obispo and then get Highway 1.

A good stopping point is either Pismo Beach (coastal town) or San Luis (a bit inland). It wouldn't go amiss to spend a second night in Monterey. The Big Sur drive -- while not that many miles -- is a slow one (two lane and curving) and there is a lot to stop and see.

Cambria or San Simeon would set you up nicely for the drive up the Big Sur coast.

SM to Cambria: Approx. a 4 1/2 to 5 hour drive without stops

Cambria to SF: Approx. a 6 hour drive without stops (Once you get past San Simeon, lodging is scarce and expensive until you reach Monterey)
