SF to LA road trip april help needed

Hi this is my first time in California

We are a family of 4 two girls aged 11 and 13

Arriving SF plan to spend 3 nights and then 3-4 nights in LA region at the end of trip

Therefore have approx 8 nights to plan for the coastal route between SF and LA

Would like a night in a log cabin or a national park otherwise open to suggestions and an ideal stopover plan for those nights any suggestions and an itinary with driving times etc would be great.

Many thanks for any help

Lots of folks plan a route like this: SF - (get rental car) Yosemite NP - Monterey - Morro Bay / Pismo Beach - Los Angeles

Itinerary planning is usually done on the California state forum. If you really want to spend your 8 days in the Big Sur region, then this is a great place for feedback.

There aren't any national parks along the coast between SF and LA. Just state parks.

You could do something like this:

Monterey: 2 nights (Asilomar Conference Grounds, Andril Fireplace Cottages, Bide A Wee Cottages)

Big Sur: 2 nights (Big Sur Lodge, Ripplewood Resort, Riverside Campground & Cabins)

Pismo Beach: 2 nights (Pismo Lighthouse Suites, Cottage Inn, Sea Crest Resort, Cliffs Hotel)

Santa Barbara: 2 nights (Ask for lodging recs in that forum)

Drive times:

SF to Monterey: 3 hours without stops via Highway 1

Monterey to Big Sur: 1 hour

Big Sur to Pismo Beach: 3 hours WITHOUT stops.

Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara: 1 1/2 hours

That's kinda what we are thinking of doing, SF and rent car and drive the coast and stop along the way.

My question......how do you know where to stop for great pictures, or see the sites? Are there signs along the coast that points out whats ahead or down a path?

Or are there LOTS of pull out spots, where you can get out and see the "pretties"....I know if we "go into" a State Park we will take a hike and see some nature but what about just driving down the road? How will we know to stop, or that we might have missed something???

Not all scenic or accessible spots are signed. For instance: Pfeiffer Beach. There is no sign indicating the turn. If you blink you could miss it. (It's the Sycamore Canyon Road turn not far south from Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park). Others are in plain sight: Bixby Bridge, Point Sur Lighthouse, Ragged Point, elephant seal rookery, etc.

Some of the sights can be enjoyed via the many signed "Vista Point" turn outs.

Famous McWay Falls (The pretty ribbon waterfall that drops on to a beach) is located within the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park 8 miles south from the Nepenthe property. There's a sign indicating the turn 1/4 mile ahead.

Yes, there are lots of turn-outs to take in the views, take photos, etc. Be sure to allow yourself several hours for the drive.

Kibblesmom....thanks for the info!!

We are hoping to leave SF early in the morning and just start driving and stop where ever we feel like. I was just curious about signs and missing any cool " must-see" things......we will just drive slow and stop a lot!!!
