Oct 29th Wknd Trip Advice

Heading up the coast this weekend from Los Angeles (Friday through Sunday) for the first time. Been told that Big Sur is amazing and need need advice on how to spend the short time we have up there. Would like to pack in as much as possible for Saturday to see all the beauty before heading home Sunday morning (wish we had more time!)...any must see's?

I hope you have reservations in place or you could end up without a place to sleep. Big Sur/Monterey/Carmel book up quickly for weekends, so try to find something now! Just an FYI.

Now.... on to the sights:

Elephant seal rookery 4 miles north of Hearst Castle (Good for about 15-20 mins)

McWay Falls @ Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (This is the famous waterfall that drops on to the beach)

Partington Cove (Just north of McWay Falls. Look for the metal fence 1/4 mile north of the falls on the west side of the highway, as it isn't signed. It's a hike down to the beach, but you'll be rewarded with a special view)

Pfeiffer Beach (The turn isn't signed. The first street you can turn left on after driving past the Post Office is where you make the turn. Great place to watch the sunset, but be prepared for a twisty, narrow road on the way down/up)

LA to Big Sur is approx. a 6 hour drive WITHOUT stops. If you're coming up Friday evening, some of the sights on the above list will have to be visited on Saturday or on Sunday on the way back. Watch for falling rocks :-)

Welcome to the forums! This is a very common question. Take a look at the FAQs for Big Sur on this website. Also, this link may help, as it has suggestions for things to do and see in Big Sur:

As mentioned, McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is a must! Andrew Molera State Park also has great hikes and trails.

Lunch at Nepenthe's is also a must eat. Order the Ambrosia Burger and take in the amazing scenery!

If you like music, you may want to check out the Big Sur Spirit Garden. They are having an international festival on the 29th.
