Fog

We are planning to drive the coastal road and Big Sur next August - last time we visited San Francisco in August the sea mist/fog made it feel really cold when down at Fisherman's Wharf. We drove along the coast for an hour and the sun didn't come out once! Does the fog ALWAYS come in August - there will be no point in driving to see the coastal views if it does. We are planning to stay Monterey or Carmel for a night en route.

1. Re: Fog

Best time to visit with less chance of fog is October. June through August is heavy fog season along the California coast. That's due to the pressure systems that keep the central valley hot in the summer.

Most foggy days burn off mid morning to early, mid afternoon in the summer, but it can come in and just hang around all day.

Thankyou - unfortunately we can't travel in June or October as we have to take our vacation during school summer holidays! We will keep our fingers crossed that next year we are lucky!

Hi Neep. While it's generally true that August is very foggy, you just never know. This year we had the most beautiful fog-free August I've seen in many years. I think you have to come here expecting fog, though. Hopefully, you'll get a nice surprise!

Also, the fog is not necessarily the "pea soup" kind on the coast. Often it only enhances the view of the crashing waves and rocky coast.

Find some Ansel Adams photographs of the California coast and you will see what I mean.
