Many reviewers of Ocean Coral & Turquesa have recently commented about the poor state of the road leading to the hotel off the main highway. Having just returned from there, I can report that it is absolutely deplorable. This road also leads to Now Sapphire, Excellence Riviera Cancun and a few other resorts, It has degraded considerably since my last visit about 5 months ago. For about half of the distance between the main highway and the hotels, there just isn't any more road. It has mostly washed away with water filled, wide, deep ruts that no one would want to drive a vehicle through/over. Attempting it requires swerving from one side to another, driving at no more than about 5 miles per hour, and avoiding other cars that have become stuck or broken down along the way (as well as a substantial amount of praying :). Apparently rebuilding the road is a political issue with the town, larger city and all of the hotels each not wanting to shoulder the bill and everyone pointing fingers and claiming that they are willing to pay but no one else is willing. Meanwhile it just gets worse and worse.
According to one driver, the taxi union recently collected $100 from each driver to purchase 5 truckloads full of crushed stones to attempt to fill in some of the holes. Indeed we saw the piles of stone being dumped onto the road yesterday. Hopefully this will help. (This driver also claimed that the poor state of this road was the primary reason for the recent taxi blockade at Marina El Cid.)
Does anyone have more information about this? It is really a shame as it affects every guest (and every worker) at any of these resorts.
