wow what did they want to charge you? I think they have a new policy of 2 nights if you cancel? Is that right?

I know they switched the policy in January - right after we booked. Their liberal cancellation policy was one of the reasons we booked directly with them. I called them for a clarification and talked to a rep in the US. She said that they were changing the policy in a few days.

Also, their website allows you to select king or double rooms. Apple's site does not (although the staff, for some reason, doesn't understand what their own website states). When I confirmed the reservation by email a few weeks ago, the person confirming said to remember that beds are based on availability. Well, not according to their website. They will honor my reservation and they will give me a give bed. Chances are, I'll probably end up with a king anyway.

So far, not impressed with Secrets customer service but we'll see. Confusion about policies is very common at Mexican resorts - it seems like many resorts just make things up as they go along without changing their websites or fine print.

Lisa - I am sorry about that but go with good intentions and have fun. You can take your notepad but it wont hurt them. If you go with that plan it will only hurt you. Enjoy your time and go somewhere else moving forward. Why waist a week in paradise focusing on the negatives? Have a blast and if you feel Secrets did you wrong never go back to a Secrets. That is your best punishment to them if you feel they were unfair.

I have to say I don't find $50 unreasonable - there are plenty if hotels around in Canada and the US who charge the first night as deposit (I have a few booked for a trip next month). If there was zero penalty, people may well reserve several hotels, waiting to see if something better / cheaper comes along, and cancel a few weeks our, leaving the hotel with rooms unsold, that may not have time to sell again. If that became widespread, it would lead to higher costs for all travelers.

Total agreement with Emma on this one. There is a cost associated with the booking and then the cancellation of the booking. I think $50 is not unreasonable.
