Where to stay 5/9-5/10 in Flam area

Hello,

A friend and I will be on the Nutshell in mid-May and will be stopping over in Flam for one night on May 9th. I've been reading other forum topics about whether Flam is the best place to stay as opposed to other towns nearby, but as we'll be picking up the Nutshell to Bergen the next morning, would we be better off to stay that night in Flam even if there might not be as much to see or do? We have checked Airbnb options in that area but haven't had any luck. Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

Without a car the overnight options would be in Flåm, Aurland, Stalheim and Voss. Flåm has the most options with a couple of hotels, a guest house, apartments, cottages, camping including cottages rented by the night, hostels. The tourist office web-site will give you the list of options.

You can also continue to Aurland on the NiN-boat. This boat between Flåm and Gudvangen calls at Aurland, so you can continue your NiN the next day. In Aurland there is one hotel and one guesthoues. The guesthouse also have cottages rented by the night and a camping offering cottages and apartment along the river -1,4 km from Aurland village.

Taking the NiN-boat to Gudvangen there is a camping and a motel.

Continuing by the NiN bus from Gudvangen to Voss, you can stop at Stalheim, the best view point in the Nærøy valley. All the NiN-buses stop here. The one hotel is in an isolated setting.

Continuing with the NiN-bus to it's end stop at Voss there is a range of accomodation, from historic hotels to youth hostel. There is even an option on airbnb.

Continuing from Voss to Bergen, consider taking the 925 Hardanger-linja bus via Hardangerfjord for a better experince. The views are better than from the train and you get to experience the Hardangerfjord-area.

Travel planner and timetables at www.skyss.no or ask at the tourist office or your accomodation.

For a wide range of airbnb-options you need to go to Bergen.

For those interested in the Hardangervidda mountain plateau it would also be possible to do a stopover at Finse or Geilo. Ideal for hiking in summer and skiing in winter. The skiing season lasts until May.

Thanks for this info!

I've just begun planning our first visit to Norway and have been considering the NIN tour from Oslo to Bergen (or in reverse - depending on what the opinions recommend).

My question: Is it easy to get to hotels/lodging from where the train stops without a car? Is it within walking distance? Taxi? Horse and buggy?

Lots to consider on this trip.

Thanks for your help!

Definitely within walking distance if you're stopping in cities like Bergen, Voss and Flam. Not sure about the smaller stops along the way, but I found most of the country's cities extremely walkable.

My husband & I are trying to plan fjord portion of trip to Norway. Expect to leave Oslo am 14 Sept by train [saverpass] to Myrdal, private train to Flom, boat to Balestrand. Overnight there booked. Possible boat trip toward Glacier am 15 Sept, then depart Balestrand @ 1150 by boat to Flom @ 1320. Then take Safari Heritage boat 1500 - 1750 Flom - Gudvangen - Flom. Saw Vossabia Farm Guesthouse listed under Voss lodging. We're using public transport. Is there a bus to get us to this lodging which would run late enough? And is there a bus to get us back to Voss station am 16 Sept to go on by train to Bergen? It appears from some brochures that some excursions end 15 Sept, is that correct? Also any comments about Vossabia Farm Guesthouse & how far it would be from the nearest bus stop/train stop & whether there would be any place nearby to get supper? Suggestions?

That is a serious case of backtracking. With your plan you will do the Aurlandsfjord 4 times, Nærøyfjord twice and Fjærlandsfjord twice.

Thanks for the detailed info, heaps useful!

I'm doing NIN from Oslo to Bergen, staying overnight in Flam. 18:45 till 12:00pm in Flam to be exact. From there will take the classic Flam-Gudvangen ferry, bus to Voss, then train to Bergen.

My question:

1.For things to do from/in Flam, is the return boat trip to Balestrandd worth it? It stops at Balestrand for 30 minutes. I've read great things about Balestrand but not sure 30 minutes there or the ride along the way is worth the early morning wake-up and all.

Alternatively there is a local tour to Stegastein Viewpoint near Aurland, is it good?

Would love your advice on things to do there!!

2. I'm traveling on 10&11July, when do you suggest i start booking tickets and making reservations? I saw a lot of dates for the 3pm Flam-Gudvangen ferry trips are sold out on their website! scary....

Another vote for Stegastein.
