Stay in Flam

We will join "Norway in Nutshell" & travel from Bergen to Oslo in late-Jul. We will stay a night along the route, which stop you will recommend? Flam, Myrdal or Gudvangen? Will it be possible to carry our big luggage with us along the way? On the boat, train & bus?

Thank you.

As long as you can carry your luggage you can bring it. There are no porters though. Flåm would be the best place to stay overnight. Myrdal is just a rail junction and Gudvangen is only a hamlet with a ferry dock.

As I write this, I am looking out on the fjord, harbor, and rail station at Flam from a room at the Fretheim Hotel. Of the three places you mentioned, Flam is the only one that has hotels -- the others are just collections of buildings mostly as transfer points for tourism, with a few houses nearby.

Halfway through our stay here, we are pleased with the Fretheim. Clean, nice lobby with snack bar, restaurant, and bar overlooking the fjord, and great location just steps from the Flambana terminus and the boats. We arrived by car, but most other guests here have come on buses, the train, or boats. There are some shops and restaurants, and side excursions to various nearby sights can be arranged.

The sun has been up for two hours, but it is still quiet because it is before 7 a.m., but will become very busy later in the day.

We will be in the same tour in the same time as you are. Also, will be staying an overnight in Fretheim Hotel. We can't wait!

We will have one big(gish) luggage and didn't want to carry from Bergen to Oslo. I have found a porter service by an advice of our hotel in Bergen. They have a website and speedy communication. They will pick up our luggage in the Bergen hotel and leave at our hotel in Oslo in the same day. Price is NOK 250 per piece. Their website: www.porterservice.no
