travel to Abisko and Kiruna

We plan a Hurtigruten cruise in March 2015. We want to get off the ship in Harstad on the southbound trip and travel to Abisko. How is the best way to do this? Is there a better port for us to get off the ship?

Yes, Harstad is the port closest to Narvik where you can get a train to Abisko. The best (most frequent) transport from Harstad to Narvik is the airport coaches Harstad-Evenes and Evenes-Narvik. Check www.flybussen.no for departure times closer to your date.

Trains Narvik-Abisko are operated by Swedish Railways. Check www.sj.se for train times closer to your travel date.

If your intention in going to Abisko / Kiruna is to see the Northern Lights, why not do this in Norway by getting off Hurtigruten at Tromso and staying there, or alternatively at Hammerfest and go to Alta. Both places are much easier to reach and scenically more interesting than Sweden.

There are also a couple of regular buses per day from Harstad to Narvik. Both require one change. But I agree with above - Abisko is not really interesting at all. A rather godforsaken place if you ask me.

Would people who have cruised with Hurtigruten in March let me know what the weather was like please? I have heard that the fog could be very bad and we would not see much.

@Lynne R

What others have experienced is hardly relevant unless you have the data from every day in March from the last 10 years. From north to south you cross several climatic zones with a coastal climate. Weather varies between north and south, it varies from one year to another and it is all highly unpredictable. There may be storms, horizontal rain, blizzards, fog, bad visibility and perfect sunshine and calm seas and winterwonderland all in the same week.

I am planning to travel Narvik to Kiruna on the Arctic Circle train on Sunday 29 March 2015. The timetable seems to indicate depart Narvik 10.53 arr Abisco 12.31. We would like to stay in Abisco for a couple of hours and catch the train to Kiruna departing Abisco 14.22 arr Kiruna 15.32. Is this feasible? Do you know approximate costs of this trip?

Doing a stopover in Abisko will double your railfare as stopovers are not allowed on the low fare. Imo there is absolutely nothing worth stopping for in Abisko and it can be bitterly cold waiting around. With 85 inhabitants it is not much more than a hamlet.
