Taxis from Hurtigruten docking area to airport in Kirkenes

Four of us are taking the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes in February but we need to know how we can organise a taxi to meet us on arrival as our flight to Oslo is at 11.30 and boat docks at 09.45. Any information about approximate cost etc. would be much appreciated.

I do not think you should worry too much. You will be in the capable hands of the ships's staff. They will be there to help you and answer all your questions. Ordering a taxi for you will be plain routine for them.

The last updated prices from the taxi company's website is from 2009 and states 320 NOK (420 weekends) for a trip from the docks to the airport.

The Airport Coach will also be at the docks ready to take passangers for the 1130 SAS flight and 1200 Norwegian Air flight. 85 NOK for adults, 45 NOK for children.

Is there a similar arrangement for arriving at the airport in Kirkenes from Oslo for transfer to the docks?

Taxi's operate both ways and you could prebook if you wish.

We are doing this in May next year and Hurtigruten have basically said that they know lots of people are going for that flight and so work hard with their own transfers to get everyone there. Not sure if they have their ownbus or simply oragnise getting all passengers onto the airport shuttle. The transfer for that section (by bus) was pretty low cost so we just went for that.

I suspect that that flight is there to serve that ship arrival in a large part, so the link up should be practised....of course as always that never stops the unexpected but the routine should get you there.

This may be an impossible question to answer, but is the boat ever so late that we'd miss our flights? Is there enough to do/see in Kirkenes that would justify staying overnight and flying out the next morning?

If you have travel insurance it should cover you for any extra costs incurred in the unlikely event that Hurtigruten is so late that you (and many others) will miss the flight. In winter Kirkenes has the Snow Hotel and other winter activities, but the rest of the year there is not a lot to interest most tourists.

Correct me if I'm wrong Klima, but I think Hurtigruten will miss out Vadso and go straight from Vardo to Kirkenes if running late, and then go to Vadso on the way back?

I have experienced that both Vardø and Vadsø have been skipped in bad weather. Despite the huge breakwater, Berlevåg is also a tricky place when windy and often skipped. Kjøllefjord is more sheltered, Mehamn depends on the direction of the wind.

Last winter it happened more than once that Hurtigruten seeked shelter in Alta and skipped the rest of Finnmark altogehter. Finnmark locals were not best pleased with this solution, but that is another story.

Better check conditions of travel insurance before relying on this. Normally there is a minimum delay of something like 2 hours before the insurance kicks in. In other words if the ship is late by 1 hr 59mins then you won't be covered. Don't forget documentation about the delay.

If you are booking the flight and ferry with Hurtigruten they should take care of you if the ferry is late docking. But if you have booked a separate flight you may find it is your responsibility and if the ferry was late you would loose your flight.

As said before check any insurance you have.
