It is beautiful and much smaller; about 1/2 the population of SML.

Possibly less of a resort feel and more of a village feel, and yes, lovely!

Camogli is very different. In my view much prettier, much more historic and unusual. Look at the many online pictures to get a feel of it. And it has its own local ferry line http://www.golfoparadiso.it/

However, if you loved Santa Margherita, think carefully about why you loved it. Camogli does not have the same shopping opportunities, is much more enclosed and built up next to the sea, has just the one large pebble beach not a number of small beaches. Etc. It is possible that someone who enjoyed Santa Margherita might enjoy a larger resort town, e.g. www.sestri-levante.net/index.php… more than Camogli.

You would find Sestri Levante more like Santa Margherita Ligure than Camogli Cat0506.

Stayed for a week last year in Sestri Levante and visited Camogli.

I quite liked Sestri but a couple in our party who had previously stayed in Santa Margherita were disappointed in the night life in Sesti compared with SML. There is no doubt that SML is more up-market compared to Sestri. So it depends on what you are looking for in the resort.

Camogli is completely different from the other two places and although I liked it very much for a day trip it in my view is too small for a longer stay unless you like the idea of staying in a old style fishing village sort of place.

There is an American expat, "mushroom," who moved with her husband from NYC to Camogli. She loves living there. She also travels frequently around Italy and has some wonderfully detailed suggestions and information. She is quite active on the Frommer's Italy travel forum. If you need more on-the-ground personal experience, you may want to pop over there and ask this question. My guess is that she'll be quite helpful to you.

thank you so much everyone for your comments and suggestions, lots of food for thought and still thinking positively about Camogli - we generally use places as a base and incorporate some 'day trips'

We stayed in Camogli and loved it.

I hadn't been back for 20 years and it was still as charming

From here we did day trips to the Cinque Terre and SML and Portofino.

One of my favourite things to do is walk to the Punta Chiappa, then take the boat to San Fruttoso, then a boat to Portofino, walk to SML and then a train back to Camogli.

I told my husband that when we retire the place I want to live is Camogli!
