Tipping is not compulsory in Malta but nevertherless is welcome by the service providers.

In some places when you finish consuming your orders a waiter/waitress would comes along with the bill in a very small plate/tray , Once you check the bill, you suppose to put the money in that plate/tray and give it to them. When they came back with your receipt, then it up to you whether to tip or not before leaving. Some other place have tips plates/trays along the counters.

5% to 10% tip should be considered generous tip. But it is not compulsory.

Malta is definitely closer to the UK than to America regarding tipping. So if you work on that basis you won't go wrong

10% is a nice tip in Malta remember coming from Ireland most resturants bars etc are much cheaper over there pint around 1.80. 200 smokes €39.00 get them in the airport when you are waiting on you bags.

There is tipping in Malta, unfortunately a lot of it of the illegal tipping nature, all one has to do is take a walk through the beautifull countryside and it is not long before one comes across discarded bathroom suites, builders rubbish, cookers fridges and freezers, refuse sacks, and anything else that the illegal tipper couldn't be bothered disposing of in the correct non-hazardous manner, as I said the Maltese countryside is very beautifull and the lazy thoughtless perpetrators of these eco-crimes should be made to pay big time when / if they are caught no matter where they are in the world, god only created one planet and eco-system and when man has finally finished destroying it then there will not be a 2nd chance.

Good point. Perhaps you can raise it in a diffrent posting. We don't want to confuse the topics.

Tipping money to waiters etc in Malta is purely at ones discretion as it is any where else in the world, there you go back on track.
