Before Christmas right until the 24th, shops remain open for extended hours (i.e. after 7pm) periods of time, and open on sundays too. So don't worry about the shops.

As regards apartments - there are many. But you have such cheap package tours from the UK - is it possible you still look for apartments with the prices your travel agencies in the UK cn offeer you?

I think in winter the best area is Sliema/St Julians. There are all the amenities, shops, restaurants and bars you need. It`s a residential area so there always people about. Buses are frequent too.

You should get anoraks with you of course, but often the weather is surprisingly mild and sunny.

Christmas is celebrated mostly in the British way so you`ll get the Christmas Carols everywhere story here too.

Christmas is not likely to be cheap as it is peak time as is Easter. I would look at all possibilities - apartments and hotels. Sliema is an ideal location at this time of year as it is a residential area not a tourist area so everything will be open as normal. Plenty of hotels in the area and also some very lovely seafront appartments to rent. As someone mentioned make sure you have some sort of heating as the houses are built for the summer so they can be pretty cold in winter - you are better off out in the sunshine, it's warmer outside sometimes.

Weather can be variable but it is often nice and sunny on Christmas day. You will need warm clothes though.
