I haven't stayed at either hotel recently, but know Birr very well. Dooleys is a traditional coaching inn (albeit greatly restored about 20 years ago) which is in the main Square of Birr. A great location. The bar and coffee shop are popular with locals.

The County Arms is one of those hotels which started out as a large house and was extended into a hotel. It is just slightly out of the town 'centre' in its own grounds but within close walking distance to the main square. It has also been greatly renovated recently and now boasts a leisure centre, etc.

Birr is a lovely town. It has a lot of Georgian architecture, including a Mall, Oxmantown Mall, (not to be confused with the American shopping 'mawl'.) And, of course, the Castle Demesne is wonderful. If you are coming in the autumn it will be a great time to see it. The telescope there is world famous in astronomical circles.

You cannot visit inside the castle itself, but the grounds are fully open and there are some very good exhibitions.

Birr is also very handily located for visiting lots of other places, being almost in the very centre of Ireland.
