Day Trip: Adare to Cliffs/Burren Itinerary Help

Can someone suggest the route and stops for a day trip from Adare to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren?

Where should we stop and eat? Aillwee Cave or Doolin Cave?

Can we sneak in Bunratty Castle?

Thanks for your pointers!

You might want to drive up further north along the R480 towards Ballyvaghan too. There are quite a few portal tombs and ringforts and things along that route if you like that kind of thing.

What time of the year will you be here?

Take a look at www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes for distances, estimated times (add on about 10% time to get a more accurate calculation) and directions.

Take the tolll tunnel from the motorway to bypass Limerick City (cost €1.80). Bunratty Castle and Folk Park will take about 3 hours. Don't even consider the Cliffs of Moher unless the weather is good. Mist means no views, rain means miserable and no views, wind means self-propulsion!!

In terms of eating, Lahinch has a few nice places, depending on the time of year.

First consider the weather before you set out, the cliffs can be engulfed in cloud, mist spray even if it is clear a couple of miles away. I would drive through the Tunnel up the M18 and head out to Balyvaghan via Gort.

Call at Kilmacduagh Abbey (Keys available at bungalow across lane) and Caran for the Michael Cuzack centre or Burren Perfumery. Drop into Balyvaghan past the Ring fort and Dolmen. or the corkscrew road.

Aillwee cave and Bird of prey centre might be the best bet of the caves especially if you can get onto a Hawk walk.

From Ballyvaughan to the Cliffs can be a straight drive down or round by Blackhead and Fanore breaking into Doolin, This is a a great drive on a good day but I would opt for the main road if the weather is soft.

Late lunch in Doolin would for me be O'Connors but others might prefer the classier Stone Cutters.

After looking over the wall, over the Cliffs you have options but with the evenings setting in around 5pm you might just head down the coast to Spanish Point/Quilty and back via Ennis (Food in Brogans if you skipped lunch) to Adare.

If you have to do Bunratty the same day as the Cliffs (personally I would do separate days) then do the castle first and then the Cliffs heading back later.

Check out www.met.ie for the Irish Meterological service.

Also Google "Accuweather Ireland" or "Accuweather Galway" to get an idea of how the weather will be up to 15 days ahead. Its sometimes inaccurate but it does give trends.
