Weather in Early April

Only get 1 bag on the flight and want to spend lots of time outside. Any packing suggestions for the weather in early April?

Here is a summary of what the weather wasike here last April. However treat this as a guideline only as the Irish Weather is VERY unpredictable from month to month, year to year.

My recommendation regardless of time of year is to pack layers which can be built up or stripped off depending on the weather and temperatures.

As it will still be chilly enough in April particularly at night and at exposed coastal areas, I recommend the following:

Base layer or thermal under shirt, tooped with cotton shirt or light fleece, topped with fleece jacket, topped with a good qyality rain jacket.

Walking trousers are very light yet warm and the higher quality models will dry faster too. You could also pack a light pair of long johns for trips to exposed areas.

A pair of light gloves are worth bringing to kkep the chill off hands in exposed areas, and also a fleece hat or headband that will cover the ears is worth packing.

April can have its sunny days too so don't forget sunglasses, leave purchasing of the sun factor until you get here, or alternatively bring a small amount to get you started. You may never get the opportunity to use it, I hope you do. While i would also recommend that you pack an umbrella, it would be best to wait until you get here and purchase one if you need it. They can be bought for about €5 upwards.

There is no need to pack any 'haute couture' items of clothing, the dress code here is mostly casual. There are some exceptions to this but unlikely you will encounter them on a short holiday.

If you 'think layers' when it comes to packing for your holiday here in April - you won't go wrong.

Thank you so much Bryno. I would not have considered long johns but they are such a practical solution because they roll into a tight little ball. Just 1 last question, I have a good quality pair of hiking shoes but they are not waterproof. Shall I make a new purchase, would you say?

Walking boots that are not waterproof will not be a lot of use if you intend to be out and about in rural areas, but if you are going to get new boots, do it NOW!! so that they are well walked in by next Spring. nothing worse than new boots on holiday. I always wear my boots to fly in as they are too heavy to pack. Would agree with Bryno, themal underwear, hat and gloves.

Non-waterproof hiking shoes will be useless. Irish bogs and mountains never dry out

Hey Fellow Canuct. 4 of us went last April the weather for the 10 days was fantastic .The Yanks were fishing at Adare Manor in shorts. So my exp is dress for spring early summer weather. . The Wife bought a good LL Bean rain coat & never wore it But they had great & better rain gear at far less prices over there so what you need buy over there the quality is good & so are their prices . We stayed in Dublin & Limirick & from there saw all the main sights easily I rented a Mondeo from Dooleys in Dublin & for 4 of us it was perfect. if you drive just Stick Keep left on the Steering wheel to always remind you & buy a Flat cap & you can get away with a lot as they will steer clear of you. roy

Hello Ottawa. We leave in 2 sleeps! I have packed a hooded nylon rain jacket that is bulky enough to fit a jean jacket or seewater underneath so I think that I am ready for eveything. Even got the long johns packed as was suggested. I ended up purchaing a pair of Romika walking shoes that I have waterproofed. We have a car and I can't see my entourage walking through the bogs. The reason why we are escorting another couple is that they have mobility issues. Now what we are trying to figure out is how we can go out in the evening for some fun (read: consume some pints) and still get home safely. I understand that the legal alcohol limit is even less than Manitoba. So shuttles, taxis, etc. is what I am researching right now. We've decided not to go into Dublin as everyone besides me has been before. We are going to concentrate on "our" side of the island and spend some extra time in Galway for the Food Festival. Thanks for your pointers. Are the tulips blooming in Ottawa?

In Ireland you would be mad to go by what the weather was like last year. The best you can hope for is some dry days along with a few wet days and plan accordingly. Who cares if the tulips are blooming, just get out and enjoy yourselves ~ they certainly are around here, 'bloomin luvely'.
