I am wondering if there are any sandbugs in the sand on the Island?
whats a sand bug?
do they bite?
paul - its what many in the forum lovingly refer to as "sand flies" .. non-flying , very much biting critters. some islands have them - most thankfully don't.
oh right... sand flies..... nasty litle critters. Sorry Snurran, not been to Oluvheli but in my experience, sand flies can appear most places. Ive only been bitten by them at night though and now tend to avoid walking along beaches at night except for the odd midnight dip
Hate to say it, but sand flies, can actually fly. They come out when temps are cooler, either early morning or from dusk onwards and their bites are some of the nastiest you can get from small insects. When it's too hot, they bury themselves in the sand. Their bite is actually a sting, so it's a bit of a misnomer.
You might try a fly repellent - RID (Australian) contains three insect repellents, including a fly repellent. We used it very successfully (no bites) in the African bush (40 days) and my backyard.
RID TROPICAL STRENGTH INSECT REPELLENT CONTAINS: 19.5% DEET plus two additional repellents, including a FLY repellent, Antiseptic to kill a wide range of bacteria, Vitamin E for moisturizing, Chamomile for its soothing relief, and Triclosan (an anti-bacterial/ inflammatory agent).
I hate being bitten.
Thank so much for your information. No, not nice at all to get bitten.
