Rainy day activities?

After four days of rain, and visits to Trummelbach Falls, Schloss Thun Castle and Thun, Gruyere Cheese Factory and Caillier Chocolate Factory, looks like we need two more days of rainy day activities. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideas include the Swiss Open Air Museum and Chillon Castle, but any others would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello!

Do you have a fix accommodation somewhere or do you travel from place to place and checking in to a local Hotel or B+B?

We have a chalet in Kandersteg until Saturday, so cannot change location completely, but have a car available for day trips.

Ok, well I wanted to suggest you visiting the Canton of Ticino (Locarno or Lugano) as they have SUN from today troughout the entire Weekend and temperatures around 70 to 80°!

But it's about 4h driving from Kandersteg as you Need to make a big detour around the mountain passes due to snow fall up there!

What about the Jungfraujoch? You can take the Train at Lauterbrunnen (about 1h driving from Kandersteg) and getting up to the highest Train Station in Europe at almost 12'500ft.

The obvious choice is Bern. Not only is this a beautiful city and seat of our national parliament and administration but the entire centre - historic district - is arcaded streets so you do not get wet.

see this for Bern and park at the Rathaus parking which is close to the old centre -

I would not advise going to Ballenberg (Open Air Museum). As its name implies it is open air and you have to walk a LOT between the buildings with no shelter. And neither would I suggest the Jungfraujoch since it is snowing up there today and you won't see anything.

The weather is supposed to improve a lot tomorrow and will be very nice on Friday. So perhaps tomorrow is a good day for Bern and then you can resume outdoor activities around Kandersteg! Driving to the Ticino is a rather far-fetched proposition but if you really want to go south of the Alps then put the car on the train at Kandersteg and drive over the simplon which will be clear of snow today (snow line has gone above 2000m and the simplon is 2005m) and down to Domodossola. OR put the car on the train again at Brig and go to Iselle. Domodossola is a pretty little town with a nice historic centre...

Another thing to do would be car train to Goppenstein and drive here to Martigny. Visit the Gianadda and the Dog Museum. But until tomorrow this won't get you out of the rain. Bern will!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Luckily it cleared up here today in the late morning and we were able to do some local hiking, but we will have to see about tomorrow!
