Our 25th wedding anniversary in Leysin

We are traveling to Switzerland for our 25th wedding anniversary in June. My husband traveled to Switzerland when we were engaged and has always said he wanted to take me there for our 25th wedding anniversary. We are coming this June and making Leysin our home base for one of our traveling weeks. (My husband fell in love with this village 25 years ago.) We have a car and are trying to decide what some of the best day trips might be. We love the beauty of the outdoors and are looking for wonderful places to explore. We also would love any recommendations as to dining in the area.

Leysin has not changed much in the last 25 years so your husband should find things as he remembered them!

there is a huge amount to do inthe area:

Montreux - Chateau de Chillon, Rochers de Naye, walk along the lakeside promenade. Eat at the Palais Oriental on the lake.

Yvorne - visit this lovely village in the middle of the Chablais vineyards

Aigle - visit the chateau and the wine museum

Col de Pillon - take the cable car up to the Glacier 3000

le Bouveret - go to Aquapark for a few hours or the Swiss Vapeur Park (steam engines for children)

Vouvry - eat at the café de l'Auberge de Vouvry. Very nice!

Vevey - go to the Saturday market on the market square, then take the funicular up Mt Pélerin

Chexbres - walk in the vineyards of Lavaux. Eat at the Baron Tavernier restaurant

St Saphorin - eat at the Café du raisin (filets de perche!) and wander around the village

Take a boat for a day on the lake

Visit the Pays d'Enhaut (Rougemont, Rossinière, etc) and continue on to Saanen and Gstaad. if you go via the col des Mosses you can come back via the Pillon.

You won't be bored with your surroundings...personally though I would not have chosen Leysin as my base!!

Thank you for all of your ideas. I do have a question about Montreux. I have read parking can be a problem. Any advice?

There aer several places to park in Monterux, and all are indicated as you come into town with (I think) the number of spaces left). I usually park at the "Marché" and if not there at the "Casino". I have never had a problem - yet!

There is free parking for enough hours to see the castle at Chateau de Chillon just outside Montreux.

Hi Hambagahle, since you mentioned that you wouldn't have chosen Leysin as your base, could you tell me where you would have, keeping in mind that you would like to tour the areas you specified. Thanks

Good question! If I wanted to tour in the general area around Lake Léman and in the Chablais/Pays d'Enhaut (Gruyères etc) and even the nearby French shore of Léman and the Valais I would have chosen a town on the plain, not in the mountains. And especially not Leysin which is very steep and really lacks a "centre" so that it is different in atmosphere from, say, Villars.

the ideal place to me would be in or around Montreux. Transportation links from and to Montreux, by road (autoroute and routes cantonale) trains (4 different lines converge in Montreux) and boat are very good. Just over an hour from Geneva airport, about an hour and a bit fom Bern, 2 and ahalf to zermatt etc.

Add to this the enormous choice of hotel accomodation in the immediate area from B&B to 3 star to 5 star hotels. You can, I think, see why this is a godo place to be.

If you don't like a town the size of Montreux - and it really spreads out along the lake from la Tour de Peilz in the west to Veytaux in the east, then look at Villeneuve. You can walk or take a bus or train from Villeneuve to Montreux, it is a small place, has several smallish hotels and a few nice places to eat!! Vevey, in the other direction towards Geneva, is bigger than Montreux, and flatter. Not as many hotels as Montreux though but it does have one remarkable restaurant. it is really a "company town", housing the world wide HQ of Nestlé.
