Does anyone know whether there are bike rentals in or near Weggis and whether there are real bike paths?
One of the national bike routes goes through Weggis, but it follows a busy road which sort of defeats the purpose. The whole of that side of Lake Lucerne has a main road that runs along the shoreline.
There are some nice lanes - largely traffic free - west of Weggis, going out towards Hertenstein and Eggisbüel, but this will only keep you occupied for a couple of hours. Everything else (alpine farm roads, etc) is going to be VERY steep.
You could cycle up the main road to Küssnacht, then over to Immensee and bike round the Zugersee
(another lake). A lot of the Zugersee round trip is on minor, car-free roads, and cycling on the pavement is allowed on the east side of the lake where there is no alternative to the main road.
