hi, can anyone tell me more about Gruyeres during December? What to expect etc - ie - weather, access, restuarants etc - what to do as a day trip. Thanks.
In December it will be cold, and possibly snowy, but also possibly rainy. In any weather, Gruyeres is interesting. There's a really good cheese museum by the station, with an audio tour and a packet of free cheese at the end. Up in the town, there are little shops and restaurants. Also, you can tour the chateau, which has plenty indoors.
If you wanted to extend the day, you can take a bus from by the station (or drive if you've got a car) up to Moleson village. There you can catch a funicular (very steep railway type thing) to Plan Francey (mid way up the mountain) and then a cable car to the top of Moleson mountain to enjoy the views and eat at the self service cafe there.
To check about trains and buses go to www.sbb.ch/en
Put your start point in as the "from" and Gruyeres as the "to" point. If going up to the top of Moleson interests you, put Gruyeres as your "from" point and Le Moleson as your "to" point.
Was just having a look at the Moleson website, and the funicular and cablecar will be closed for refurbishments from the 29th October to the 15th December 2007.
What a great choice to pick Gruyeres as your base. It's such a lovely village in an absolutely pristine, beautiful setting. I think you'll have a great time!
Some ideas for day trips are:
Montreux -- walk along the lake, see the Christmas markets, visit Chillon.
Hope this gets you started!
