Layover at MUC Airport

We arrive from Naples, Italy on our way to the US at 11 am and depart at 4pm. Is this enough time to get to Freising for lunch? Is the bus the quickest way or should we splurge on a taxi?

We have never exited an airport before during a layover and are a bit worried about how to do this.

We know that we can store our carry ons at the airport.

Where does the bus drop you off or if we take a taxi, any suggestions where to go for lunch?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks,

Barb

The buses to Freising connect the 2 terminals at the airport without any further stop with Freising train station. The buses run every 20 minutes. Travel time is 18 minutes. Single ticket is EUR 2,50. A mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket is EUR 10,20.

The train station is just outside of the old town center.

I see no problem to do this by public transport. You can always hop on a taxi - see their locations on the map - back to the airport if you think this is necessary/better.

Thank you Abalada.

We are leaning towards a taxi and thinking of going to Weissbrau Huber for lunch and then get a taxi back from there.

Could some one elaborate on the logistics of exiting and re-entering an airport during a layover.

Thanks,

Naples to Munich is an inner EU (= no customs) and inner Schengen (= no immigration) flight. Your luggage will be checked through to your US flight. You just walk out of the terminal building and hop into the first taxi in sight.

Thanks! When we return, I would assume we go through security again with our passports and boarding passes?

Yes. Of course. And as its a flight to the US this can take its time. Best to ask the airline - e.g. at an airline counter at Munich airport - when you should be latest back at the airport for this.

We enjoy Freising as a great spot to spend our first nite in Germany when we fly over from Boston. It is a quiet, small town that can be easily walked in a short time.

Despite that, I don't see the value of moving away from the sirport on your layover. There are a couple of good, sit down restaurants within the terminal. We just passed through there in September on our way back to Boston and we had a 4PM flight.

Once you pass through the first security, there are 4 more checkpoints to pass through and this takes a good deal of time. By about 3 PM, there were lines everywhere.

Are there lockers for your carry ons?

We really just wanted to see a bit outside of the airport, but security lines certainly have me worried. There is an area to store carry ons for about 2 euros each.

We will play it by ear when we arrive and stay at the airport if our nerves get the best of us.

Thanks for your reply!

Which terminal do you use? Termial 2 has always been fairly rapid and better organized than T1.

Out of your 5 hour total layover time maybe 2,5 hrs can be spent in Freising. Lunch takes ~1 hour and ~1,5 hours for a stroll around the town. Maybe worth the pain if weather is fine. Freising itself is quite nice and compact.

I am not sure which terminal it would be. We arrive on Alitalia, but then leave Munich on Lufthansa.
