Supermarkets open on Sundays?

Hi, we arrive this Easter Sunday 31/3/13 at about 5pm in Beziers, can anyone tell me if all the large supermarkets in Beziers shut at 12 on Sundays and will all supermarkets be totally closed on Easter Sunday. Also any family friendly recommendations for restaurants in Beziers. Thanks for your help.

Traditionally speaking, shops do not open in France on Sundays. However, shops can open on Sundays, usually in the afternoon, in the Christmas shopping weekends, and shops in tourist areas can open on Sundays in the tourist season. Some supermarkets also open on Sunday morning, for food only.

In 2009, parliament passed a new law allowing shops to open for trading on Sundays in the main shopping areas of Paris, Lille and Marseille, and in tourist areas throughout France. (Not sure about Beziers).

In my experience since the 2009 law was passed, supermarkets across France are still generally closed on a Sunday all day. That also goes for the cash tills at petrol stations.

The Intermarche in Beziers is usually open on Sundays until noon. But that doesn't help, since you'll arrive at 5:00 p.m.

Supermarkets and food shops are open on Sunday mornings until 12:30 or 1 pm only. After that you'll only find the little corner shops open and about half the bakeries.

I just saw a note at my local Carrefour in Narbonne which is a very large supermarket indeed - they will be closed on Easter Monday as well as Easter sunday. Little supermarkets may be open in the tourist areas - just ask around as it can be quite conincidental which shops are open. Shops on the motorway will be open, but they have a limited selection of goods.

the smaller supermarkets (like Intermarche) in the Paris region are advertising that they'll be open Sunday hours on Easter Monday -- so if you can find a restaurant on the Sunday, you can shop Monday morning til 12h30 or thereabouts (if they follow the lead of their colleagues)

The hypermarches will likely be open at least a few hours on Sunday.

Casino Géant I think is one of the largest Supermarkets in Béziers, they are not open on Sundays. It does not say anything about Easter Monday - so it might be that they are open.

Intermarché would also be closed on Sundays.

Agree that Intermarches in France usually open on Sundays till noon or 12.30, but that's ng to you in any case given that you arrive late afternoon.

The Auchan in Beziers seems to be closed all day Sunday but will have an 'exceptional opening' on Easter Monday from 08.30.

That Intermarché is actually open on Sundays but it won't help the OP as it follows regular Sunday hours, meaning open in the morning only: intermarche.com/magasin_infos_pratiques.aspx…

Most (but not all) hypermarkets are normally closed on Sundays. Only supermarkets and minimarts tend to open Sunday mornings.

The smaller the place (owner-operated little grocery shops without employees) the greater the chance of opening on Easter Sunday and any Sunday afternoon.

In all my travelling in France I have only ever found supermarkets (even small ones) open on Sunday afternoons in major tourist areas and then only usually in July and August.

And hours are even more limited during religious holidays eg Easter and Christmas.

You will be very lucky to find anywhere open on Easter Sunday at all. Even in the money driven UK, Sainsbury's large stores will be closed all day Easter Sunday.

We do have a minimart in my neighbourhood open from April 1st. Saw some activity today, meaning they are stocking up and preparing for the seasonal opening. Open every day including Sundays.
