Provence to Barcelona

Hi

We are looking to drive from Milan to Barcelona in the first 2 weeks of August and I would be most thankful of suggestions of which town to stay in Provence and where to stop in between Provence and Barcelona. We are thinking of avoiding big cities and staying for a couple of nights in Collioure/Argeles-sur-Mer and then drive to Barcelona.

Chris

I would say that where you stop is where you are able to find accommodation : the coast is very crowded in August.

You may want to look inland. What is your budget?

Collioure is a very pretty town.

Are you aware that, if you rent a car in France and return it in Spain, there will be a one-way fee of several hundred euros?

As mentioned, one-way drop off fee between countries will significantly increase the cost of car rental. Perhaps look at taking a train Milan-Nice and get a car there. Drive to Perpignan, stopping along the way. Collioure is half an hour from Perpignan, where you can drop the car and take a train to Barcelona. You have a wealth of choices as to places to stay, though maybe no bargains this late.

Thanks for your quick replies.

It will be a group of 4 of us so the cost of the one-way drop off is not so bad. We read that train connections between Barcelona and Perpignan are not so easy and we would like to have the comfort of choosing the stops on the way.

Where would it be nice to stop on the way from Collioure to Barcelona?

many thanks

The 8.56 am train is direct and fast. If you want to take it, you have to go to Perpignan as it does not stop in Collioure.

The regular train stops in Collioure and involves a change at the border.

They all stop in Figueres and Gerona and don't follow the coastline.

Figueres has the Dali Museum, and nothing much else - though Besalu is close - but Gerona is a very nice city with an interesting medieval center..

You could drive from Collioure to Cerbère, visit the Monastery of San Pere de Rodes on your way to Figueres or the Greek and Roman ruins of Empuries.

Near Girona is the lovely village of Pals. Also La Bisbal if you are interested in ceramics.
